I just built a new pc and installed battlefield 3, played 2 64 player matches on the default ultra settings [motion blur and vertical sync off, 90 FOV] and i played on back to Karkand and Caspian border and with fraps running it jumped around 30-60fps sometimes dropped below 30 when it was a overhead view of a base while spawning.

My system is I7 3820 @ 4.3ghz, XFX DD Radeon 7970 @ 1125 gpu clock and 1575 mem clock, Motherboard is the x79 asus sabertooth and 16gb g.skill ram 9-9-9-24 1600

Do those frames sound right?

There is no way that people are getting 35 fps dips with xfired 6970's or single 7970's under normal operating conditions with only 4x msaa and a sub 1920x1200 resolution. My single 570 performs better than that as far as minimum fps on full ultra 4x msaa goes ( I don't play with 4x msaa obviously, but just saying for a frame of reference).

Your resolution isn't enormous. Really I have to suspect the extremely low minimum fps during gameplay is driver related. Hardware wise the 7970 can pull a lot better minimums than that, at that resolution.

How high is your multisampling set to? 4x?

Really with a 7970 you shouldn't be dipping to 35 fps outside of the loading screen unless you are on an absolutely massive resolution. Which I suppose is a good question. What resolution are you playing at?

Well the 6970s in general should do a little better but it depends on the game, I would prefer to have a single card though. I get dips to 45-50 sometimes so I have to set aa to 2 x msaa to avoid that. To be honest I can't see the diff in IQ but it makes a huge difference to the frame rate.

You're correct. BF3 does not use PhysX. And while the GTX 570 did slightly outperform (re: within a margin of 1-2 fps) the 6970 at resolutions 1920x1080 and below, you (the OP) have a 7970. That is a lot of firepower. If you're getting 35 fps framedips during actual gameplay then something is wrong. Make sure you're not accidentally forcing like FXAA through Catalyst or something that would be compounding your anti-aliasing.

how much memory does that GPU have? I found a massive link between memory and texture quality settings. Try high instead of ultra textures. Close up they will be the same it only affects textures in the distance afaik.

My SLI 560ti system (1gb video memory per GPU) chokes like hell when running ultra textures. On high the game runs extremely smooth at 1080p (60-200fps @ all ultra, high textures, no MSAA, no ambient occlusion). I am not sure how powerful your GPU is but if it similar to the 560ti, 4x MSAA shouldn't be a problem at 1080p. Running at a native resolution of 2560x1440 on my other monitor, 4xMSAA has a massive impact on the frame rate. You might want to try turning it off and seeing how it affects performance.

Lastly, ambient occlusion is the third biggest hitter in terms of performance degradation as far as I can tell. Try running with/without that. All other settings from what I've found do not have any significant impact on the frame rate
