i am running an old k6-300 as a suse linux server. i was wondering if i need to run a fan on it? i would like it as quiet as possible so that it can be left on and not noticed whilst i get some sleep.
Don't get me wrong but, is the CPU still alive? Seriously, check the CPU temp, but I sure it's quite hot right now. A fan will help, just buy a low RPM fan and check the difference.
It couldn't hurt. It prolly didn't come with one though, maybe only a heatsink? If that's the case stick to what they've supplied it with. Proper case cooling will be the main goal here.
i have tested it with just a heat sink and it seemed ok. I installed linux with it off so the cpu was quite active.
i have a coolmaster running on it at the mo, a little over kill i admit but the fan only seems to run during boot up. Is this because it thinks it doesnt need to run the rest of the time?
K6-300 unlike one of its predecessor's (K6-233, which till thsi is is and was oen of AMD's hottest running chips ever) only uses a 2.2VCore and was a fairly cool running chip for the time.....therefore I would say running it with a decent Heatsink should be sufficient.....
That chip puts out 18-25 watts of power. You should be able to get by with a sizeable heat sink. I would run a fan off the 5v red line and get quiet operation with enough air movement to keep the processor happy.
