Assuming this is the motherboard in question, yes, it will work.Hello
Was wondering can i fit a Samsung 990 PRO 2TB M2 to a Gigabyte z370p d3 motherboard?
I already have Samsung's 970 plus 500gb but i want to upgrade.
Thanks in advance.
Yes that's the one.Assuming this is the motherboard in question, yes, it will work.

The M.2 port is PCIe 3.0, so you'll not see any speed increase.
You will get the larger capacity, though.
The 990 Pro is a PCIe 4.0, the 970 is 3.0.Yes that's the one.
Thank you for providing me the info!
By the way a question regarding the speed thing, what do you mean exactly?
Also quick note: I use HDD and SSD, HDD is for my windows and SSD for games only. So i want to move everything to the Samsung's 990 PRO 2TB so Windows+Gaming together since the 970 Plus 500GB is not that much nowdays for both.
I see, so in reality 990 PRO won't be using it's speed to the max since it's "twice as fast" it will be using only around 50% or a bit more of it's speed in theory if im getting it right. The 990 Pro is a PCIe 4.0, the 970 is 3.0.
In published numbers for Sequential performance, the 990 is "twice as fast".
That does not translate to user facing performance.
And in a 3.0 port, exactly the same.
However...moving your OS from an HDD to a solid state drive (of ANY type), is a huge increase.
The 990 Pro is PCIe 4.0.I see, so in reality 990 PRO won't be using it's speed to the max since it's "twice as fast" it will be using only around 50% or a bit more of it's speed in theory if im getting it right.
And i will be upgrading the motherboard in the next year or so to a new one since i have this one for about 6 years now, but i want to move my OS right now to a SSD from HDD since it's just way to slow...
Thank you for the explanation. The 990 Pro is PCIe 4.0.
The M.2 port on the board is PCIe 3.0.
Performance depends on the slowest device in the chain. Here, the M.2 port.
As said, though...you'll see a huge benefit from moving from an HDD to the solid state.
As for this, since my OS is on the HDD, every program that i use from Chrome to my work programs are on it so they load really slowly...What is your plan for getting all of this on the new 2TB drive?
Right.Thank you for the explanation.
As for this, since my OS is on the HDD, every program that i use from Chrome to my work programs are on it so they load really slowly...
Example: Sometimes when i jump into a game with friends lets say and then when i alt-tab to browse maybe music on Chrome etc the load time of the videos/programs are long and laggy.
Well im still thinking, can i have OS installed on the new SSD and HDD at the same time?Right.
Moving your OS and applications from the HDD to solid state is a huge benefit.
I was just asking how you plan to do this.
Can you have the OS on the HDD and SSD at the same time?Well im still thinking, can i have OS installed on the new SSD and HDD at the same time?
So when i boot the PC up i can just choose the SSD one?
I just want to move some files from the HDD to it and unplug the HDD that's the only reason for questions above that im thinking about.
Or should i just save the files online and unplug the 970 and HDD then just plug the 990 PRO and install OS on it?
Will it work if i move those files that i need to an USB instead? Can you have the OS on the HDD and SSD at the same time?
Yes, but you absolutely should not.
"some files from the HDD"
That won't work.
2 options...
Clone everything from the HDD to the new SSD.
Then, install all your games on the new SSD.
Or
Fresh install of everything.
Specifically, what are "those files"?Will it work if i move those files that i need to an USB instead?
And yes i want to do a fresh install on the new SSD.
I dont know how much u are into programming but they are files for the program i use for programming.Specifically, what are "those files"?
Those should be fine.I dont know how much u are into programming but they are files for the program i use for programming.
Example for Word u have those files when u open them Word starts and then opens that specific file that has the project of some kind on it if you get what i want to say.
Files for Word, Exel, Photoshop etc...
Yes, can't i just move them to that apps folder when i install it again on the new SSD and folder? Those should be fine.
Just note that they will be living under a different drive letter and path, so adjust accordingly.
Depends on exactly what they are, but maybe.Yes, can't i just move them to that apps folder when i install it again on the new SSD and folder?
They are IML files.Depends on exactly what they are, but maybe.
Word/Excel templates?
