Does any body really like XP so far...?

Yes I like it quite a bit. Upgraded from 2000. I installed it about a month ago and it's been running continuously since...not a single crash.

paid $5 for a legit copy of xp pro too! (ok $5.25 after tax)

why is it you always see windows 98/me users bitching about compatibility this, stability that, and "I can do everything..." yada yada when they've never tried 2000 or XP?

The people who have tried both are strangely silent...and using 2000/xp. I think only newbies are still using 9x perhaps.

I guess I haven't really gave my 2 cents for XP...

I think it's awesome how I can leave it on for days at a time. The longest I've left my computer on is for like 5 days. (Sometimes, I might turn off my computer for the sake of saving some electricity.) Coming from Windows 98, it's nice not to have to worry about system resources.

I did use Windows 2000 for awhile, and I know XP is based on the same NT kernel. But, the simpleness XP seems to bring makes it a little more attractive. I like the new Start Menu, the time synchronizer (after changing the time servers in the registry), the better Help & Support, the PPPoE support (without having to use the 3rd party RASPPPoE), and the networking wizards.

I'm still not used to the power of NT, though. I'm not sure what settings I can tweak to make my box more efficient. I can say one thing, though - ClearType rocks!

Newbies love it yes. I love it because all the NT/2000 stuff is still there under the surface. If XP was based on 9x instead of NT, I would have never touched it.

9x is just plain horrible. People get used to the fact that their computer crashes and just accept it. If 2000 hadn't come out I probably would have switched to linux full-time. (NT powerful/stable but has quite a few limitations)

I love it because Newbies love it. I built two machines over the Holidays, one for a friend and one for my father-in-law. Don't need to worry too much about my friends Pc (XP loaded). Father-in-law's is a different story (98se installed). I've already had to visit him twice in one week to fix it.. Next time I'm sending the wife, it was her idea to load 98. 98 is way too easy to mess up. I'd imagine that EOM tech support for new PC's has dropped because of XP.

At first I hated it because of the layout, but then I got used to it and it was Ok. I'm back to hating it now. It sucks. It eats up system resources and is buggy as hell. I really hate it.

""It sucks. It eats up system resources and is buggy as hell. I really hate it. ""

Are you serious?

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

"Are you serious?"

Nah. It doesn't eat up resources any more than win2k. But you have to fiddle around with it to figure out which stuff is just the run-of-the-mill Mickey Mouse shiat that msft likes you to play with/tracks you with.

Overall, it takes longer to get setup and tweaked than win2k, but there's some good features and default checkmarks/settings. The 'file search' function still pisses me off, though...to an EXTREME. I hate things that cannot be customized.

But, I think I've just crossed the 50% barrier; I'm sticking with Winxp. Winnt 5.5 *is* a step up from Winnt 5.0.

Xp is really good except for pure gaming and perhaps cd burning?!
Haven’t got 3D Mark score close to Me, and some game tend to crash
more often whit xp. Especial net game…
Pretty big difference between home and pro do.
Xp home better for game and pro for network and heavy app i.e.
Maya, Cad and stuff. (i.e. support 2 cpu)
Otherwise its not like half India’s population has been working day and night
for nothing in Silicon Valley. It’s nice to look and work whit.

Win 2K - XP: Not much difference. Set the interface back to Clasic Windows as most existing users are going to do and ya don't get much difference... Drill down's in general have an additional layer before getting to the botton settings... Performance seams to be about the same... No signifigant additional features or functionality over W2k. Don't have my CD burner on the XP box so I can't comment on the built in burn capabilities...

But, if I work didn't give me a corp version of XP without activation I sure wouldn't be buyin it with my own money , or puttin it on any systems of mine!

WPA(activation) - Callin home(M$)- Possible DeActivation - No Way!
NOT ON MY BOXES!!!

Being a programmer and required to be on call for support I'm supposed to be using XP and checkin it out for full deployment... XP does seam to be stable and OK, but certainly no more stable or full featured that Win 2000 (I've had Win 2k on one box since the original Feb 2000 release and it's NEVER Blue Screened on me! or been any problem, and can will run for months without shuttin down... Win 2K is a ROCK).

For Win 9X and ME users Win 2k or Xp will be a new level of stablilty. However I think XP is a consumer trap. Just like harddisks - There's going to be only 2 types of XP systems. Those that HAVE been deactivated, and those that WILL be deactivated... (Oops, perhaps a third type... Those that just Can't be activated!!!)

I'm stickin with Win 2000 till M$ gives me a reasonable, affordable XP license without builtin Activation/Deactivation...

(and my SuSE Linux runs real good also and is great bang for the 39 bucks. Does everything a Desktop and aServer needs to do...)

I have yet to get over 48 hours of uptime with win2k/xp. The programs might stay running, but my mouse goes wonky, or I can't right click open a drop-down menu, or explorer crashes and doesn't reload (i.e. no taskbar). Ecc on or off, 48 hours is the absolute limit.

Now, Mandrake 8.1 on my laptop is one stable mother. I had it running a puny ftp server for an entire week straight. Granted, I don't know how to burn disks, or play Icewind Dale/Jagged Alliance 2, but having that computer on for one week straight gave me the willies. I had 'impending doom' syndrome every time I pulled it out of screen saver.

And here's my new WTF?! rant: What's up with the 'this program has encountered an error and will now close' box? I got tired of seeing it, and just left it there. The program didn't stop, didn't crash, and I just kept using it by moving that 'crash' box out of the way. Is it a 'proactive-chuck-it-before-it-bsod's-the-os' kinda' msft thing? What good does it do if you kill the serial killer when he's 2 years old (i.e. before he starts whacking people)?

I would like to know what kind of hardware you're running and what version of drivers you had for each piece of hardware. I haven't turned my comp off for over a month and the only time I rebooted was when I installed software that required it or driver/Windows updates... absolutely NO problems with uptime. If you can't get more than 48 hours, then there is something wrong somewhere. I can only speak from my experience.. and from my experience Windows XP is Microsoft's best OS to date. Sure, it's not perfect, but in these days of release now patch later, I've come to expect the odd bug somewhere no matter what software I use. I have had zero issues with XP.. I'm primarily a gamer and I love how all my games run with it. Can't say the same for Win 2K. CD burning works great.. I don't use the software included with XP anymore, I picked up a copy of Roxio 5.0 because it has more features... no problems there. All any of us can do is speak from what we've experienced. As I said earlier my experience with XP has been nothing but positive; but I can definately relate to those having bad experiences. To lay complete blame on the OS isn't the answer however... because if it's such crap.. I should be having problems with it by now shouldn't I? (I paid to be a beta tester btw.. so I've been using XP for almost 6 months now)

Zoron,
Can you post your system components here? I'm trying to eliminate a BSOD and I'm wondering if it isn't just the Via/XP/nVidia combo?

My System:
AMD Tbird 850
AOpen AK73-Pro mobo (KT133 chipset)
1.12GB generic PC133 ram
9GB Seagate Medalist Pro HD
20GB WD Cavalier HD
Creative Labs PCI128 sound
Elsa Erazor X GeForce 256 video
USB mouse, PC Cam, and Palm cradle
AOpen CDRW2040
Generic CDRom 48x

I've got the new Detonator drivers, no help...
the new 4-in1 Via drivers no help..
Flashed the BIOS.. no help..
Turned on and off PnP in the BIOS no help..

Do you know if you can update the BIOS on a video card?

Yes, I had similar problems with the VIA/nVidia/XP combo, but it's gone now with my Radeon 8500.
