Hi, I'm looking at getting a new processor, either the i3-2120 or a AMD quad core. I was wondering which one runs cooler,(I am going to be gaming on either on so I would be using a lot of the processor for extended periods) and if it runs cooler would it mean that it would have a longer life? Thanks for anything that you can tell me.

As long as you are not running the CPU at insane temps you will be fine. The i3 does not run to hot however if you want the coolest temps possible invents in aftermarket cooling.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065 is pretty good for the price.

When looking at CPUs usually 70c is the max you want to see them running. The i3 should run much lower then this.

For gaming I would suggest the i3 ^_^ good luck.

Regardless what you get invest in a good aftermarket cooler. If nothing else its worth it just for the quiet compared to noisy stock coolers. I've used AMD CPUs exclusively since 2003 (six of them) and none have ever failed from heat or anything else.

They have their strong points no doubt, but there are many apps that a higher end X4 (like a 975 or 980) will beat an i3 in quite handily.

The life of either CPU is easily 20 years so...

I find that I have several decent CPU's and no motherboard.
It's the motherboard that usually fails before the CPU, and a new replacement is expensive, since by then it is regarded as obsolete.
