Domain name is not available can not log on

I upgrade My windows to the sp3 pack and now it won't let me log on

Can you login in Safe Mode ? No Network.

If yes, and you are not on a network domain, go to control panel, system, computer name, change. Switch from domain to workgroup, give it any name unless you have a home network. Use the home network name.

If you're not on the domain, then use the local administrator to log in.

Make sure it's the local administrator, and not the domain administrator account. Since you're using XP, you'll need to change that 3rd drop down box, to the local computer (not your domain).

No problem....Ok, here's the main login. Make sure the 3rd box is set to local computer(this computer), not the domain name.


The username will be administrator

And assuming you didn't password protect the local admin account, there is no password.

I don't get that box when I log on, I get the other windows log on one.

At that login screen, press ctrl+alt+delete.....do you get another login screen?

Yup, I get the other screen also the message I'm getting is "the system cannot log you on now because the domain name is not available"

You see the 'options' button? Click that. It'll give you the 3rd box, to change the domain.

My computer only gives the shut down button when I hit the options button

Then you shouldn't be getting that error message. You don't have the domain login option, and you are using the fast switch screen (which isn't an option on a domain).

Was the computer ever on a domain?
