My old (2007) 500GB WD5000AAKS drive has failed and is no longer available on the internet.. Can I replace it with a 500GB WD5000AAKX drive. What do the letters signify?
Sorry that your old WD failed. 🙁
Yeah, you can replace it with WD5000AAKX. Actually, voltoid27 is right. The only difference is that the newer drive model is SATA 3.

IIRC the only difference between the S drives and the X drives is the SATA interface. S= SATA II (3 Gb/s) and X= SATA III (6 Gb/s). So yes, replace away!

No you can't recover it yourself. You can only ruin it permanently.
Opening a hard drive requires a specialized clean room environment. If you do it anywhere else, this ruins the drive.
