I recently got DSL from my ISP and I am using the kit they send me (with the DSL modem included) but the theorical connection speed of 1000 KBPS is more like 420 KBPS according to the CNET test speed....

Will buying a DSL MODEM from a store give me better connection speeds?....thanks for the help

Those online test are not always accurate. I suggest downloading something large from a known fast server and seeing what your kilobytes/s is. You can take that and multiply it by 8 to get your kilobits/s. If you get somewhere around 125kilobytes/s downloads then you are getting the rated speed.
I find dslreports.com to have more accurate speed tests if you just want to run more speed tests.

no, but I have had faster thouroughput with Cable connections.
I get 3000mb second for $45 month, and have not seen DSL speed/price ratio anywhere near this.
