Dum question for installing windows 10

When installing windows 10 with a usb, when you get to the part where you're able to format and partition the hard drive and stuff like that, do you choose the usb or the actual ssd or hdd. I was wondering if you have to choose the usb or the hard drives? Why do you have to delete the hard drives in the area? (got that from a tutorial)

You can't choose the usb anyways. You don't have to delete it, it all gets deleted anyways but if there are partitions, they don't get deleted, only the one you are installing on.
