Can someone tell me how to determine network card compatibility?

I have an ASUS P4P 800 Deluxe motherboard and want to buy an ethernet card. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Any PCI bus ethernet controller should work. But doesn't that motherboard come with on-board support for gigabit ethernet?

If you want to run a special operating system, like Linux or FreeBSD you would certainly need to look into what is compatible with that operating system. As far as Windows is concerned, most hardware works.

Incompatibilities due to hardware problems are rare for Network Interface Cards, but still do exist.
I would advise you to look in the comments of the customers on Newegg.com for the motherboard to see if anyone had a problem with what you want to buy.
