i just ordered a power supply that has both an internal relay and an external on/off switch. what position do i leave the external switch under normal operation ( using the pc power button to power up ) thanks, frank

What PSU did you order.

Anyways it should be just like a normal PSU, leave the power switch on, your power button on the computer will still operate as normal.

i got a 350W ps from atx power supplies.com. because i have an HP pc i had to search the net for a few days to find a ps with the proper dimensions. the next pc i get will either be home made or i will make sure that i can use standard replacement or upgrade parts. frank

Yeah I think the manufacturers use those odd ball PSU just to be difficult. Bet that PSU cost you a little more than a standard 350 watt PSU?

The midsized HP power supplies are the standard PS-III form factor, which is a sub-standard of PS-II (they're shorter front to rear). Once you know that, your search may become easier.

The tiny HP power supplies are the same SFX units used in Gateway, Emachines, etc.

In answer to your question about the external switch;
Normally you leave it on. Power-off/on with the front panel switch (which is a momentary contact). All ATX mobo`s are ALWAYS `hot`, i.e. there is always current running to the board. If you need to do anything internally (plug/unplug anything, add/remove a video card, etc.), turn the external switch off. This kills all current to the motherboard, while still leaving a solid ground thru the power cord. If you DON`T have the convenience of a switch on the power supply, you should always unplug the power cord (and use an external ground to ensure static elec. is dissipated) to prevent any accidental shorting of the mobo or components.
Hope this helps, Ern.

It`s only paranoia, if they AREN`T out to get you.
