DVD copy-on-the-fly slow, please help

Hi guys,

Can't fix this problem: I have two very similar computers, running exactly the same software. The one (3500+ AMD Athlon) will copy a DVD on-the-fly in about 13 minutes, the other (3200+ AMD Athlon) takes 43-46 minutes to copy the same DVD. I have tried re-installing Nero, but it didn't help. Also swopping the two identical Lite-On Combo's had no effect. Surely the difference in hardware can't cause such a huge difference in performance?

3500+ AMD Athlon 64 Socket 939:
- 2x 512MB Kingston DDR400 RAM
- 74.6 GB Western Digital SATA 10 000 rpm Raptor HD
- 160 GB Western Digital SATA 7200 rpm 8MB buffer HD
- Gigabyte nForce4 SLi Socket 939 MoBo (K8NU-SLI)
- Gigabyte nVidia GeForce 6600GT Turbo Force Edition PCI-Express
- Lite-On Combo Drive
- Lite-On DVD-RW


3200+ AMD Athlon 64 Socket 939:
- 2x 256MB Transcend DDR400 RAM
- 160 GB Western Digital SATA 7200 rpm 8MB buffer HD
- Gigabyte nForce4 4X Socket 939 MoBo (K8NF939)
- Gigabyte nVidia GeForce 6600 PCI-Express
- Lite-On Combo Drive
- Lite-On DVD-RW

Both PC's run Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 1a and Nero Ultra v6.6.0.1. All other software also the same.

Please help.

I wonder if the differing amounts of RAM are causing this?

I'm not an expert but I agree with WW. On the fly copying depends mostly on the RAM, since there is not an actual copy of the dvd on the hdd.

Try adding more RAM on your second pc and you'll notice a difference. Not 13 minutes but around 20-25.

Thanx for the advice, I swopped the 2x 256MB and the 2x 512MB in the two pc's. Unfortunately it made no difference at all. I've also tried swopping the IDE cables, no luck. Should I try repairing my Windows installation (although I'm experiencing no other problems) and/or update the BIOS?

which drivers are you using with your setup? nvidia sw drivers or microsoft drivers?

Do both drive have DMA enabled in the disk controller properties?

Are they sharing the same IDE cable or they have each their cable?

Are the two liteons the same? I think you will find that the slow one has a firmware version that is using riplock, Riplock , most of the modern drives will only let you read a movie at 2x on purpose to discourage ripping. There are firmware mods if you dont care about warranty to remove this and enable RPC-1.

No, actually they are identical. I also swopped them and it made no difference - the 3200+ was still slow with the LiteOn that was fast in the 3500+, and the 3500+ was fast with the LiteOn that was slow in the 3200+. Weird, huh?
