Every time I insert a DVD into the DVD ROM and the Desktop or the DVD
-R/RW on the Laptop the system freezes. I have to use the power switch
to reboot it. Both systems are running XP Pro. They both have 1 gig
Ram. The notebook has FSB of 533 and PC2700 ram the Desktop has FSB of
800 and PC3200 ram. The systems both have ATI video. The Note book has
ATI 9000 Mobility with 64MB dedicated DDR ram. The Desktop has an ATI
9800 SE with 128 Mb DDR Ram. The Desk top has an Asus P4S800 mother
board with SIS 648FX chipset. The laptop has an SIS chipset. The
laptop is a BolData with is just a Clevo generic. It is a 470W and has
a 17" wide screen display. They both have an Intel 3.02 Gig
Hyperthread CPU installed. They both have Zone Alarm, Norton System
Works 2003 Pro, Spywaqreguard, The Desktop has an Audigy 2 installed
the Laptop has an integrated Realtek AC'97 audio. I have tried to
disable various components and services etc. The only good results I
seem to have is if I disable everything, but then when I enable stuff
one at a time, it will work one time in a configuration then not work
the next time in the same config. Both systems have all the MS
updates, they both use Intervideo, or WinDVD. Once the DVD starts to
play (Have to get it inserted before Windows starts) then all works
good and looks good. All drivers are up to date. Bios is up to date.
The Notebook has a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-811 drive, the Desktop has a
Lite On 16X DVD Rom. I have tried disabling autostart, did not work. I
can put a regular CD in and will have no problem, but a DVD movie will
cause a lock up 99% of the time.

This is a real problem, any help would be greatly appreciated....TIA

This problem is fixed thanks to suggestion made for the fix of
another unrelated problem by Ramesh concerning a DirectCD error listed
in XP general newsgroup by me.

Ramesh sent me to http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm to Download the
REG patch "Restore Missing CD Drive" (Search keyword "CDGONE") for the
purpose of fixing the DirectCD problem. After spending hours playing
around with the start up files and services I finally tried the CDGONE
fix and it solved the DVD lock up problem. After I ran the CDGONE fix
I had no more DVD lockup, but when I re-installed NERO which was what
came with the CDRW on the desktop and DVD-R/RW on the laptop, the lock
up returned. From what I gathered about the CDGONE fix you are
supposed to have to re-install your burning software after running it,
but after finding out that, that would bring back the lockup error I
chose to not re-install it and after testing I found it still worked
AOK.

Good luck and hope this info helps someone else.
