e6600 first time overclock

This is my first time overclocking what do u guys think? Any suggestion to make it run at 3.6Ghz? I got my rig running at 3663mhz at 9x407 at 1.50 vcore but it wasnt orthos stable it fails after 5 minutes or so and
was also able to run at 3600mhz at 1.50 vcore but fails orthos at 2hours and 15 min. My rig runs idle at 30c and full load at 55c.


my current rig is : e6600 at 3.5Ghz, 1.40 vcore (L652B304)
gigabyte ds3 rev.1
ocz 2gb pc-6400 (4-4-4-15) at 2.1 vDIMM
thermalright ultra 120 extreme
antec true power trio 650w
 
No suggestions on how to get that OC up to 3.6GHz, but congrats on your 1st successful OC :trophy: . That's good going on air.
 
Thats a great overclock. I don't know why you would want to push it much farther. I got my e6420 up to 3.2ghz and thats as high as i want to increase it without increasing the vcore to 1.5. I would check out this guide to see if it might help.
 
thanks thats a great guide. I tried upping the vcore up to 1.51 at 3.6ghz but when i was testing it on orthos for about 1 hour and 30 minute i notice that on speedfan, pc wizard, smartguardian and everest it says that my vcore is 2.29 🙁 , this doesn't sound like an accurate reading i think and my load temp was at 57c. Is there a more accurate program to measure vcore?

Is it the volts on vcore that shortens the life of the cpu or the heat generated from a higher volts?
 
Good job. Those temps look a little warm for a thermalright ultra 120 extreme. I might have to try and get my e6420 up a bit more, but right now it is running without a large voltage increase.

I must be misunderstanding how it works, because on my new system I'm only up to 2.87Ghz on my e6600, and it's already pushing my memory up to 850Mhz on a 3:2 divider. This thread has more details on my system. Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I can't figure out for the life of me how people are hitting 3.0Ghz without causing their memory to run at 900Mhz, unless they have 2:1 dividers.

Just some basics to start:

Your RAM runs at 2x the FSB. The E6600 has a 9x multiplier (9x FSB). So, if you're currently running around 2.87GHZ, then your FSB should be just under 320MHz (319MHz). If your memory was set at 1:1 with FSB, then it would be running at a frequency of 640MHz.

Ideally, you want to set you RAM to run 1:1 with FSB. So, People who buy PC2-6400 should (in theory) be aiming for an OC of 3.6GHz (FSB 400MHz) to achieve the 1:1 ratio.

In your case, I would suggest dropping the ratio to 1:1 and trying to increase the OC (if you want to try for a higher OC).

Edit: btw, I can't work out how you have your memory running at 850MHz with an FSB at 320MHz and a 3:2 divider.

FSB:RAM at 3:2 would result in memory frequency 427MHz (320/3*2 *2)
RAM:FSB at 3:2 would result in memory frequency 960MHz (320/2*3 *2)

Are you multiplying the resulting memory bus frequency by 4 in the 1st example?
 
Yeah I was trying to figure out which one temp two was so i installed easytune by gigabyte and compares temp2's reading with easytunes hardware monitor ant it turns out that temp2 is cpu and temp1 is system/mobo. So Im still a little confuse since i thought core0 and core1 are the cpu temp.......

Its probably some sensor that monitors the upper level of the cpu and not the core, tcase perhaps.... damn wheres computronix when u need him lol.
 
You can also achieve 1:1 by playing around with the memory speed. You don't need to overclock as high as 3.6ghz (which is at the extreme top end of Overclocking) for the C2D on air.

I have 1:1 on an E6600 yet my FSB is only 1336mhz (E6600 overclocked to 3.0ghz).

Acheived by running my PC6400 800mhz ram at 667.8 Mhz.

667.8 x 2 = 1336mhz.

Don't think you'll slow your system by not running the ram, at full pelt. What matters is that the ram and cpu are syncronised. The CPU can only exchange info as fast as the fsb will let it so setting a faster memory speed than this either won't work or will slow your system down as the memory and cpu might have to miss cycles when out of sync. Most BIOS's when left to their own devices set 800mhz ram at less than 800mhz simply because its too fast as standard on a C2D.

eg. On a standard C2D fsb speed = 1066mhz (quad pumped)

= 333.9mhz (x4)

RAM speed required to match it is 667mhz at 5:4 ratio (which is what most boards will set automatically).

Calculation is 667 mhz x 2 (dual channel) = 1334 x 0.8 (5:4) = 1066mhz

When my PC2-6400 memory modules say that they are rated for a frequency of 800Mhz, that means that at a 1:1 ratio, I could have a total rated 1600FSB, resulting in a 3.6Ghz e6600 and a total memory clock of 1600Mhz. Now, hot CPU aside, this memory should have no problem running this 1600 rated FSB frequency at 1:1, correct? In fact, as I understand it here, the memory in this example would be exactly at spec, and not overclocked.

Correct although I can't comment on compatabilities of that memory with the rest of your system.

You should be able to run a FSB of 1600mhz at 1:1 using 800mhz DDR / DDR 2 ram in dual channel.

This is a screen of my system running 1:1 at 1336mhz FSB via CPUZ. Note memory at 668mhz (339mhz true speed as DDR) and 1:1 ratio:

Hmm, looks like your vcore is drooping under load mate, you say 1.5V in bios, but speedfan show 1.41 on load. speedfan seems pretty accurate, i use it to check my vcore.

I had the same problem with my pb5 deluxe mobo, it was dropping from 1.5 to 1.43. i Did a vcore pencil mod on mine and now i am stable 1.4500 in bios, 1.43 idle/1.44 load :)

might be worth looking into.
My e6600 maxes out at 3450MHz tho, bit of a bummer not all can hit the elusive 3.6Ghz mark unfortunately.
