e8400 high voltage for 4.5ghz.

hi i have recently bought a vapochill lightspeed, and cannot get my e8400 stable at 4.5ghz below 1.54vcore thats pretty much the limit i want to go to on vcore. as for other voltages i have put them all up to the max i deem safe and still cannot lower the vcore. do you think its just a bad chip and i should buy a e8600 then?.
spec
e8400 @ 4500mhz
asus p5e with 502 bios
corsair 2x2gb 8500
and temps are well i dont know tbh cos they dont work 😛.

also when i lower multi and increase fsb at 533 the bios says it cannot reconise the cpu and says i need a bios update which is gay cos thats the fsb im aiming for. 🙁

First have you tried the vdroop pencil mod to stabilize the poor vcore Actual/BIOS. P5E owner so don't deny it 😛! It may get you to 4.5Ghz P95 stable.

I have one hell of a job getting my E8400 stable at 4.45Ghz let alone 4.5Ghz, i've pushed it to 1.6vcore with no joy (watercooled). Also maybe it's just my board, but she don't like 500+ FSB Stable no matter how you tweak the voltages.

If your after 4.5Ghz 24/7 clocks your better of with the E8500 or E8600 with the EO stepping, mainly to have the higher multiplier so you can get 4.5Ghz+ with sub 500 FSB. That is if you can return your E8400 without loosing too much money...

Though the benefits of running at 4.5Ghz 24/7 in comparision to it's life span, for me doesn't seem too practical even though we upgrade every year or so.

At over 500MHz I think you can expect to run into an FSB wall. I guess an E8600 would let you go a little faster due to its higher multiplier.

I'm not even gonna ask why you want such a fast processor 😉

4.2Ghz = 1.40v BIOS 1.38v Actual @ Load
4.3Ghz = 1.46v BIOS 1.43v Actual @ Load
4.4Ghz = 1.52v BIOS 1.47v Actual @ Load
4.5Ghz = 1.60v BIOS 1.56v Actual still unstable...

no its a dud chip cos i cant run on 9 multi the fsb wall is generaly due to mobo anyway i got some frosting under cpu yesterday so been frantically applying therma gresse arround the socket 😛 hope it works. i run it till xmas and see if the 1.52vcore frys it if it doesnt then i might push it harder see how fast i can go then when it dies get a e8600 with e0 stepping.

That’s a great OC as is, be happy with it.
Personally I would lower the Vcore to 1.5 and get as much as I can 24/7 OC

Even 1.5V isn't recommended for 45nm - I always hear that 1.35V-1.4V should be the realistic max.

yea i am happy now its running at 520fsb with a 8.5 multi to get prime stable for 4hr+ needs 1.53 which is fine for phase.

This is what I have read as well. 1.5V is likely to kill the processor over time, at least for the early Penryns.

homerdog your right if i was running on air then it wouldnt last very long, but the way cpu's work the lower the temp the high the vcore you can pump into them because temprature has a huge effect on quantum tunneling. which the main killer in cpu's espically at 45nm and less.

1.54v I'm scared to go past 1.3625v w/my e0 e8400. But then again, I'm also on air. Though I have gotten mine to 4288 stable for 1hr (when I stopped test due to lack of time). And I think I can probably squeeze a few more mhz out of it.

How long does phaze cooling last you? Do you have to refill it regularly or anything like that or is it more like water cooling with the Rads in a fridge?

vinegarjoe phase is actually less matienace than WC, i had WC before actually spend £250 on my loop which made it very good, but it didnt justfiy the cost for the reduced temps where as phase does, i got a £500 vapo ls for £100 second hand on ebay with spares so it was a bargian, as for the regasign only has to be dont every few years when your temp in load go to high, also all i have to do is hover the vents to stop it overheating 😀. well with voltage tweaking i now am runnin prime stable at 4.4ghz with 1.49v which is more reasonable, but im holding out for a e8600 anyway and looking to hit 5-5.5ghz depending on vid etc.

as for voltage etc if you only plan on keeping you cpu for a year or two then why not rape it while you can 😛.
