This is very frustrating. I will never buy other EA titles to advoid using of Origin, on PC. EA looses me as customer on pc games, officially.

[citation][nom]reggieray[/nom]If I have to have Origin installed to play BF3 then I will stick with my BF2 and say FU EA.[/citation]

loll i will do me too !!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if this is quite as bad as it seems, though it's not a nice thought at all. Steam has all those third party ads as well, so does facebook. EA's online privacy policy (that also covers it's services) says that it'll only share your personal info with private parties with consent, otherwise it wont. Additionally, hardware and OS aren't "oh my god they know who i am!" things, they're pretty generic, even "can you run it" collects this stuff.

Guess who's not going to pay to play BF 3 (actually, anything else) from you, EA?

This is sad, I once liked EA, but now they're messing with everything, doing it all wrong in so many ways... Not even going to start talking about DA 2.

[citation][nom]primonatron[/nom]Can someone explain what EA's Origin will be doing that Steam isn't doing?Steam collects information on what is on your computerhttp://store.steampowered.com/hwsurveyAnd their privacy policy looks like it condones the same things to me, just worded differentlyhttp://www.valvesoftware.com/privacy.html[/citation]

From reading both of them over, to me, it seems like EA will be more aggressive with user info than Valve is. Valve seems to just use hardware and software scans for their surveys while EA looks to be using it for actual snooping purposes. But, I'm not a lawyer, so what the hell do I know? However, if I had to choose between the two platforms based on which company I trusted more with my info, Valve and Steam win hands down.

steam does it for surveys and WITH YOUR PERMISSION. If you say no, they dont collect your info. EA does it for marketing and sharing and its SAY YES OR DONT USE ORIGIN. And they also do this to stick you up the ass:

Please take a moment to write your congressional representatives and EA. Here is a copy of my congressional letter to use in whole or as a template if you wish to do so:

Electronic Arts Inc. a major US video game publisher is violating it's customers rights to privacy with invasive software and end user licensing agreements that allow EA to scan all of their end user's systems software, store the information, and if that wasn't invasive enough, the agreement also allows EA to share all that information to third party service providers.

The gaming publisher is currently under fire by outraged consumers after a close examination of the End User License Agreement for Origin reveals that it grants EA the right to snoop through desktops and laptops once the user agrees to the following terms:

"You agree that EA may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer (including the Internet Protocol Address), operating system, Application usage (including but not limited to successful installation and/or removal), software, software usage and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online services," the agreement reads. "EA may also use this information combined with personal information for marketing purposes and to improve our products and services. We may also share that data with our third party service providers in a form that does not personally identify you. IF YOU DO NOT WANT EA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, TRANSMIT OR DISPLAY THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE APPLICATION."

Now here’s the kicker: if EA customers don't agree to the company's snooping and sharing of private data to third parties, then they won't have access to exclusive PC games like Battlefield 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. The Origin agreement also doesn't allow the user to opt out at any time after the initial acceptance, meaning that they either must choose to share their personal information indefinitely, or not play EA's exclusive PC games at all.

The 2 above mentioned games will REQUIRE the use of EA's Origin service, and the EULA will subject 14 million+ video game consumers to invasive information privacy violations. Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) and Battlefield 3 (BF3)are the most highly anticipated games in the coming quarter, with SWTOR expected to sell 3 million copies (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/36509/Analyst_Star_Wars_The_Old_Republic_Could_Sell_3M.php) and Cowen & Company are expecting BF3 to sell 11 million copies (http://gamepolitics.com/2011/07/22/analyst-predicts-11-million-sales-battlefield-3-first-year)

Personally, I know more than a dozen people who are planning to buy or have already pre-ordered both SWTOR and BF3. Those who have already committed money and don't wish to have their privacy violated are placed in an unreasonable consumer position...those who are getting the games may not be subject to financial loss, but have a choice to have their rights violated, or succumb to this ridiculous policy by having their systems scanned and their information sold off to other companies.

I have no axe to grind, but I want this policy stopped because it is wrong, and there are 14 million other people out there who need a voice. I hope you will lend yours to this situation as well.

So does this mean if I buy an EA game at Walmart, then bring it home, open the shrinkwrapped box, open the sealed DVD, then proceed to install, then read this EULA and disagreee, that I am screwed out of my 50 bucks or so?

I mean is Origin forced onto retail bought copies as well?

From what I've read, yes...you're screwed. Origin is required to run and play BF3.

For one, the hardware survey that Steam does is optional. You do not have to do it. And as well it only identifies your PC hardware and any applications you have registered with Steam.

As for the personal info Steam collects, its only what you upload to Steam. If you put your real name etc, it will be useable but if you don't it wont be taken from your PC.

What EA is doing is taking your info from your PC, not just whats added to Origin which is complete BS. They will track your app history too based on what you install/remove.

Sorry but Origin will never be installed on my PC.

[citation][nom]cool_guy_mike[/nom]Your wrong. Stephen Reid stated on The Old Republic forums you wont need origins to launch, update, or play The old Republic."Regardless of what other games may choose to do in their integration with Origin's desktop client, here's what our situation is:You are not required to use the Origin desktop client to download, patch or play the game client for Star Wars: The Old Republic. This applies whether you purchase The Old Republic via Origin.com or from a retailer in boxed form. You will not be forced to install the Origin desktop client. There are still various consumer benefits to the client itself, but it's not required for The Old Republic."[/citation]

Kevin Parrish wrote something in an article before researching it? NEVER.

sooo, THIS is what EA does with the name Origin?

poor Ultima. poor Wing Commander.

wait, i hope they dont change my UO account to need Origin! (yes, i still have an active account... over 10 years!)

This must be why they dont want steam to have there games.... Steam refused to install spyware and help them make money by selling personal info lol

You guys all think you are so special, it blows my mind. Every single one of you who is complaining right now are completely INSIGNIFICANT.

At the end of the day, pirating = stealing, and the majority of people who steal are of lower character then others. And yes, ALL of you are in the majority, you are all whiny little girls who use every excuse they can find so that you don't have to pay $60 for a video game.
