End of Consumer Opteron 1xx?

It's long been known that the consumer demand for the Opteron 1xx has constrained supply and that AMD has been trying to discourage consumers from buying them. Now it seems AMD has removed the pricing of the 1xx from their official price lists. You'll now have to contact an "authorized AMD distributer" for Opteron pricing.

It's hard to tell whether this is truly the end consumer availability of Opteron 1xxs or if this is just a hiccup, but it might be wise to make planned purchases soon. Even if they have cut off consumer supply they'll probably remain in stock for a while though.

Yeah, I believe its true. I had ordered an opty 170 and found out Newegg at the time, ran out of them so I ended up with a 165. They have them both in stock now though. Glad I went with the 165 anyway.

Amd has a policy of guarantied supply. While stocks may not always be available (this is a high binned product, with an enormous demand), Amd does say that it will be around for 18 months from first release.
I had expected that these chips would become available only through server suppliers, but Amd is still trying to supply the retail market.

Looks like I may need to grab up a 165 while its still a good deal.. the way things are going the upward spiraling price is ruining any deal you may have once got.

EDIT: Just saw the 165 is now 328$ again at newegg.com and not 340$ like yesterday. ORDERED!!!

This would certainly explain the recent price jump in Opteron 1xx's.

While I don't exactly agree with this move, it's probably the right one for AMD's bottom line and (still) unproven reputation in enterprise. AMD has to make damn sure they can serve their enterprise OEM customers in coming months... esp. with the all the rumors surrounding an AMD/Dell partnership.

Thanks for the links data. Good find.
