If I edit a file through right click/properties, XP (SP2 explorer) won't
refresh itself - so if I then try to say move the file to another folder I
get an error message:

Error moving file or folder: Cannot move file: cannot read from the source
file or disk

So I have to go to View, Refresh to refresh explorer.

Can anyone help me to persuade XP to automatically refresh (and keep the
focus where it was)?

Thanks

Hit the F5 key. That will refresh Windows Explorer.

Also...
204. Force Auto Refresh
