Explorer.exe will not run

Running XP Home Edition on Dell 4300 with 512 Memory 40 Gig primary HD with
120 Gig secondary HD. Service Pack 2 installed with lasted security patch
installed as well.

Starts normally up to the indiviual account sign ins. I can sign on to my
account with administrator privledges. All I see is my wall paper and
selected screen color. No Icons, No Start menu, No Tray including no
clock.

I can make the Task Manager visible with the Control Alt Delete combination.

I can run programs by using the Browser button under Run New Task.

I note that Explorer.exe is not running. When I attempt to make it run by
the use of Run New Task it "flickers" and goes away.

I have run a complete scan with my updated version of Nortor Antivirus with
no indications of infection.

I have attempted to replace Explorer.exe by naming the current one
Explorerold.exe and copy a new one from another working computer. Never got
there because as soon as I name Explorerold.exe another copy of Explorer.exe
is created from "who knows where".

I have attempted to use the Recovery Disk that came with my computer 3 years
ago. When I get to the point of selecting "Repair" it ask for an
administrator password. I tried my Home Edition password with no luck. I
tried just a Return with no luck. I tried blank, blank, blank, blank,
return with no luck. I tried Administrator with no luck. I tried admin
with no luck.

I tried to reinstall XP service pack 2 but it scans my computer and says I
am "up to date" and won't install it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a fix.

Hello, I think i can solve your problem. I see that you have attempted to
reinstall windows XP. Insert your XP cd, and click install Windows. Then
you will be prompted to choose your installation type. choose new
installation. and install windows on C: Did you install windows service
pack 2 from a download? If so uninstall the Service Pack 2, and Install
Windows from your XP CD...

Are you running StopZilla ?

What happens if you go to; Start --> run
and execute the following ?

%windir%\system32\USERINIT.EXE

What a coincidence !

I ran into this on a clients Win2K platform a week or so ago !

It is StopZilla causing thsi problem !
For some reason it is blocking the User Accounts from being properly loaded.

I have to try to remember the sequences I went through to fix thier problem but I believe I
have it.
It is detailed and needs to be performed in a specific order. I hope you are up to the
task.

Here goes...

1. Hit the key sequence "Ctrl - Alt - Del" then choose "Task manager"

2. Choose from the Task Manager pull-down menu, "Options" and uncheck "always on top"

3. Choose from the Task Manager pull-down menu, "File" --> New Task (Run)

4. Enter; %windir%\system32\services.msc then click on "Ok"

5. Find the StopZilla service and stop the service

6. Choose from the Task Manager pull-down menu, "File" --> New Task (Run)

7. Enter; %windir%\system32\USERINIT.EXE then click on "Ok"

See if the desktop and all icons now show up. If not...

8. Choose from the Task Manager pull-down menu, "File" --> New Task (Run)

8. Enter; %windir%\explorer.exe then click on "Ok"

Hopefully the desktop and all icons will now show up.

Go to ..
start --> settings --> control panel --> Add/Remove Programs
Remove StopZilla.

Reboot the PC. It should now work as expected.

According to StopZilla support...

STOPzilla: Hi David. We have corrected that issue in our latest release.
STOPzilla: You can download the latest version of STOPzilla from this page:
STOPzilla: http://www.stopzilla.com/director/?type=download

and they indicated...

STOPzilla: In the Task Manager, click on File, then go to New Task, and then Browse.
David . Lipman: OK -- What is the Command Line to uninstall in Task Manager ?
STOPzilla: When you click on Browse, you can navigate to the STOPzilla folder in Program
Files, and the uninstall is in that folder.
David . Lipman: What is the command line so I can copy and paste a reply in to the News
Group
STOPzilla: It would be My Computer>C:>Program Files>STOPzilla>SZuninstall
STOPzilla: "C:\Program Files\STOPzilla!\SZUninstall.exe"

but i solved it in a different way.
if none of the previous suggestions worked,
let me know.
i dont have the registry file that i needed to solve the
problem with me but i could help you out at a later time.
