External hard drive not detecting

Hello,
I have an external 500 GB Trascend HDD. When I plug it to my laptop/PC, the light on the HDD turns on for couple of minutes and then turns off. The hard drive is not detecting. Please suggest if there is anything troubleshooting which I can try before getting it replaced.

If you have attempted to connect the external drive to two different systems with the same outcome, then you may have one of a couple of issues:

1. Either the cable (USB2/USB3) needs to be replaced
2. The controller built into the external housing is "questionable"
3. The drive itself is questionable

Please try to connect to the drive with an Ubuntu Live disk (boot the laptop/pc with this disk) and see of the drive is accessible if not....

I would replace the drive via return/exchange or RMA.
