Eyefinity Clarification

Hello all,

I apologize for another Eyefinity thread, but I have gone through a painful day with this and just want a decisive clarification to this issue from the experts.

I am currently using an AMD Radeon HD 6950 card. It has one DVI-I, one DVI-D and two MDP ports.

I read the stickied thread and need further clarification before I buy and need to return more items today. According to the stickied thread:

YOU MUST HAVE ATLEAST 1 MONITOR CONNECTED VIA DISPLAY PORT
For an eyefinity group you can have a MAXIMUM of 2 of the following connections (DVI, HDMI or VGA) after these 2 all other monitors MUST be connected via DISPLAY PORT.

You can do this 2 ways. either by having monitors that natively support display port or using an ACTIVE display port to DVI - Single link adapter

My primary monitor is connected HDMI>HDMI.

Can I use the two MDP ports to go MDP>HDMI or will one need to be DVI>VGA?

Would the maximum of 2 connections be satisfied with the (2) MDP>HDMI or am I exceeding this even though the primary monitor is HDMI straight through?

Dont think it will necessarily matter but the info cant hurt.

You can have a maximum of 2 analog connections (DVI or HDMI)

So in your case, you can absolutely have:
HDMI -> HDMI
MDP -> HDMI
MDP -> HDMI

Here's the catch though. The adapter you linked does not appear to be an active adapter, so it will count as an analog connection. This means you will need an active mini displayport -> HDMI cable for your third connection.

Basically for the third connection, if the MDP (or DP) does not hook directly into the monitor, you need an active adapter to convert the signal and allow the use of the third monitor.

HDMI and DVI ARE digital, not analog. That's not the reason, has to do with the clock signal on display port.

the correct way to hook it up is HDMI to HDMI, DVI to DVI, and MDP to active DVI adapter. I have never understood why people use HDMI for computer monitors, makes no sense, but if you absolutely MUST use HDMI...

HDMI to HDMI
DVI to DVI/HDMI adapter to HDMI
MDP to active MDP/DVI adapter to DVI/HDMI adapter to HDMI

the last one is because to my knowledge there are NO active MDP/HDMI adapters, AMD doesn't even list that as a category on their adapter list.
