Lately i've had some problems with my computer temperatures. I never had a problem like this before, but i started playing "knights of the old republic" on my computer. When im a few hours into the game, my computer starts beeping once or twice. Then it starts beeping like crazy. I have a brand new P4 2.8c, with an Abit IS7 mobo, and i installed that Abit EQ program that tells u the temp of your cpu and the speeds of your fans. Everything was super high, computer wouldnt stop beeping until i restarted the computer.

After a little bit of snooping around, i was trying to figure out what the problem might've been. My only conclusion so far is that it might have something 2 do with the fans. I have the 1 cpu fan and NB fan connected to the mobo. My case also came with 4 fans, 1 ontop, 1 on the side, 2 in the front.

I looked in the program Abit EQ and it showed that i had the CPUFAN and the NBFAN properly installed. But it showed the "SYSFAN" off. Am i supposed to have a sysfan? How do i get a sysfan? I tried finding some info on this sysfan stuff, but didnt get much luck. Was hoping someone here could help me out. Same with the AUXFAN, not sure exactly wat it is, and im hoping someone here could explain these 2 things to me. That would be great.

These are the temps/speeds im getting:

CPU: 2300 RPM / 48.0C
NB: 4500 RPM
SYS: 28.0C
PWM: 37.5C

What temps are normal? and what temps are too high? And same with the fan speeds, whats normal? and whats too fast?
Also, from all this info, what do you guys think the problem might be? When my computer started to beep like crazy, i checked in Abit EQ, what the temps/speeds were, and the NB i saw was at like 11000 RPM's, and the SYS/PWM temps were above 100C. It changed quite dramatically and quickly and i have no clue why.

I'm sorry if these questions are really noobed out, but i could really use some of your guy's help.

I believe it is your CPU temps. Generally that is what sets off a BIOS alarm. Generally you reach that point, just for a second, and the heatsink cools it off just enough so it only beeps that one time, then it just slowy works it way up to the fast beeps.

System fan is just a case fan, I assume you have at least one. Your case fan could either be plugged directly into the powersupply, or it could be plugged into the motherboard and just not have an RPM sensor.

That 48° C CPU temp you listed, is it at idle, or under load? I would use some sort of temp monitor, like motherboard monitor, then use some sort of CPU benchmarking utility, SiSoftware offers free utilities, to run the CPU at 100% load for several minutes, somewhere between 10-30. You may find that your CPU temperature climbs and eventually sets off the alarm, similar to the game play.

Try that first.

I cant seem to find this utility that runs the cpu at 100% load. I have Sisoft Sandra 2004 and i didnt see anything in there, i also tried CPUBench2003 and there was nothing in there either. Can you give me a link to a program that does that please? Thanks.

In SiSoftware Sandra 04 go under the wizrad module, and click Burn-in Wizard. Click next, then unselect all tests except the CPU Arithmitic, and CPU Mulitmedia tests (those are the only two you need to run). Click next, change run prority to high, and then there is a option underneath that (check boxes) to monitor system health. This will allow you to select the option that shuts down the computer incase of a overheat or failure. The default is to run each test 10 times, this should be enough.

Also just a heads up, the box says if the flame animation stops to restart, be patienet, it only moves every 30-60 seconds on some computers, so give it some time before you decide whether or not its frozen.

This test should run your CPU at almost 100% load the whole time, and should make the temperature rise. If nothing happens try upping the number of times it repeats to be sure.

After I finally got a heatsink that got my temps under control on my ovcerclocked 2800+ XP (running 2.6 ghz), I ran the CPU at 100% for nearly two hours, to make sure nothing funny was going to happen.

Alright thanks Mr.5oh. I'll do that right now, but while im doing it. What happens after i test it out? What am i supposed to know? Whatever i get in SiSoftware, how do i know if its good or bad?

Thanks again Mr.5oh

You have to set a lot of the parameters in EQ manually. Make sure that none of them are set too close to threshold or it will wail like a banshee. Max CPU temp alarm should be set at 65C. You cannot have Winbond Hardware Doctor and EQ running concurrently either. Sysfan just refers to a monitored fan plug on the motherboard. If you have a fan plugged into it that does not sense RPM it will not show up as active. EQ gets flaky with NB fan speeds also. Don't worry about it. 48C for a 2.8C coming off of a long game-play session is just fine. A 48C idle temp is too high. If you just installed the 2.8C it will take a couple of days for the thermal pad to minimize temps. Same thing with AS-5.

Thanks craig. Actually,i get between 44-48C idle. After i play KOTOR i get between 56-60C. But it goes down after 15-30mins. I didnt just install 2.8C its been about 2-3 weeks now i believe. I've installed the whole computer myself, and i've rechecked if everything is plugged in properly on the mobo. Everything is perfectly fine.

If you think 48C is to high for idle, what can i do? In SiSoft sandra 2004, i noticed that it said that my "Auto-fan speed control" was off, which means im supposed to manually set the speeds up. How do i set it to auto? Maybe that can fix the temp probs.
