After Ubisoft fixed their activation servers, I finally activated the game. It appears this muck up was for UK copies of the game, so I read anyway.

I haven't played it long enough yet to give a fair review, but from what I have played so far it does seem disappointing. I find the enemy AI to be outdated in the way they react and they show no signs of injury while shooting at them until they die. The blood effects also look absolutely terrible. The action all reminds me of typical FPS like 5 years ago or something, might be ok on the PS3 but PC gamers deserve better.

The graphics aren't bad I suppose, it could have been better but the Console market is where most of the money is made, so the graphics are for the PS3 capabilities rather than the PC.

Far Cry 2 all seem like another typical console game and I'm already regretting my purchase.

I read the 94% that PC Gamer UK gave it and thought i had to get it because pc gamer has allways given the most acurate review scores pretty much- although i didnt like Bioshock that much, but others did. So i have bought the game, and havnt even opened it yet, but after reading these comments i feel i may have been duped. Maybe pcg got paid off. Or perhaps it's just a matter of taste, like for example i dont like bioshock and that got 95% from pcg. we'l see. My trust in pc gamer may have dissapeared completely. Also i dont like the new DRM that comes with a lot of games, as I tend to fiddle about with my pc and have to resinstall windows sometimes + this game is meant to have in-game adverts or something.

On a brighter nots- I have just bought Dead Space, and can say that so far its amazing! best game i've played in a while. IT feels quite a lot like bioshock, but without the cartooney weirdness. Instead you get gritty, dark, sci-fi horror! Most of the complaints of it are about the poor controls on the pc- well all you have to do is to disable vysnc and it feels how it should (i bought a 360 pad also, but its fine with mouse and keyboard if u turn off vysnc).

I allways wait to see review scores befoe i buy a game, and this time i saw PCG's 94 and was sold on that alone....

They should have called it.. Far Drive 2! (I'm hilarious I know)

But really, I'll be honest and say it's not a very good game. Sure it looks decent and has a couple nifty features, but I'll agree with most people here and say Crysis Warhead was way better.

I wouldn't call Ubisoft a bad developer, I think they're just a little out of their element with Far Cry 2.

I enjoyed Assassin's Creed, even if it had some annoying parts. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was pretty awesome too.

Before judging Ubi, wait for the new Prince of Persia I'd say. Let's just hope it's good.

I think that the driving is realistic and all, and its certainly preferable to walking given the size of the zone of play - however I wish there had been more bus-stops or more destinations or something, really there is an excessive amount of driving at times, given that driving really serves no other purpose beyond transportation.

Thats about my only complaint.

Lol, yeah, why did they provide a bus system, but so few stops? 😛

You can use the "ENTER" key.
Just keep it pressed and select "accept".
Works perfect except for gun emplacements for some weird reason.

That's a weird way to have to accept a key command. Sounds like a mistake on their end. Its like what else do I have to do to tell them that I am sure I want to use the ENTER key for that command?

The weapons degradation seriously sucks, in one firefight all three weapons jammed, had to run for cover, one blew up in my face took a little while to realize what had happened!

The weapons you start out with can't hit the side of a barn, feels like the old A Team TV show, except the enemy seems to score damage to you quite a bit, finally realized this is basically a head shot game if you want to survive.

Reminds me of Stalker, and to me that game sucked!

Except in Stalker, you can actually see where the enemy is. :na:

Dude, arcades are dead....Anyway, that was my first shock. I wanted to run around and pick everything up like in Crysis but that wasn't happening. I agree with the E key issue. I don't get why exiting mounted guns isn't tied into the exit/interact key.

That sounds like a hardware/driver/magic fungi problem to me.

What OS do you play through? I am a little shocked at how far below Crysis the graphics for FC2 look but the FPS seem to be just about the same. For me it runs a lot smoother than Crysis...a lot less dipping of the FPS and it runs at 50-80 FPS on V. High with 2x AA. I was adjusting the settings a lot when I first started...

I have been playing it for a good 5-6 hours now. The iron sights are getting old.

Nice rant there. COD4 IMO did two things really great that every game should be held up to. The graphics weren't terribly good but their use of lighting made the game. Different maps had different hues that helped make the player think they are in a different place every time. FC2 has hints of this...the difference from morning, day, and night are good but I find the afternoon lighting to get a little washed out. They could have done more with it I think.

Second, COD4 right off the bat just busts you out of the gates into some chaotic action. Starting a game off like that is so important to keep people playing. Perhaps that is what the opening fire scene was supposed to be but it just didn't do it for me. FC2 for me so far is pretty flat after the 5 hours that I have gotten with it. It has this GTA feel to it without the cool story. I was doing the missions that you get from the com towers and the weapons guy to go eliminate a target driving around. They were all the same Fing mission with no story about it what so ever. I did about 5 of them and got pretty bored...they were just all the same thing.

FC2 fits awkwardly between COD4 and Crysis for me. The gameplay is too restricted to be on par with Crysis but the open map and open mission selection is much much better. The lighting is better than in COD4 with the sun effects, but use of environment colors is lacking. I need to get farther in the game...I still feel neutral about it.

in far cry 1 they offered the predator game mode. that was really the only reason why I played far cry 1. does far cry 2 have the predator mode in multiplayer?

Yup. I have the same "problem". I just spent all day playing Far Cry 2 and I loved it! I actually beat warhead last week and despite that fact I am thoroughly enjoying myself. The performance to graphics quality is phenominal compared to Crysis (Bear in mind I have both and recently played Warhead). Update your Nvidia drivers to unlock physics and you'll be able to fully appreciate how close it gets to Crysis as far as eyecandy is concerned.

I found it a bit tedious to constantly run into outposts around each corner, but it gets my blood pumping and I get jacked up during it. I find myself constantly looking at the clock and saying to myself "kk, I'll go eat after this mission". Needless to say this could be a very good weight loss program given that its 11:30 and i'm just eating "lunch" right now.

You get to fly a F**$ing HANGLIDER, nuff said.

Take the game as its own, there is an impressive immersive effect this game pulls off better than any other game I've ever played (pulling bullets out of your arm is badass). They balanced realism with enough explosions to increase awesome levels and quite frankly blowing Sh!t up lets off all the steam you have pent up from having to drive from point A to B to C then to D and so on...(part of RPG's i HATE is travel time, i equate it to simulating paint dry, there just isnt any point).

The engine they used is much more efficient than the crytek engine and will some tweaking there's a good possibility it could match Crysis (so far bushes don't move away, running isnt as realistic, and handguns are way to effing accurate - think rainbow six vegas accurate).

I am a HUGE fan of linear games like Crysis and Half Life 2 so this game really helps to transition me from typical FPS's to open games like Oblivion and the like. I like to beat games and this one seems to be highly interactive without too much of all that boring crap most open games have (like going from one corner to another...why do people enjoy this????)

I give it a 9.3/10 for its engaging gameplay, length, graphics quality, playability and badassery (explosions, loads of blood, and killing via machete). Also, the game actually has morning, noon, evening, dusk, and night to a notciable extent which is pretty cool to me (I havent seen this in other FPS's but maybe i'm just out of date).

-.7 for the repitition but since its "open" its hit-or-miss whether you'd even include this at all.

Well for me as I've played for a total of around 6-8 hours now.. I find that if you don't somehow ambush most of the guys you'll find yourself in a very sticky situation. The issue isn't them out numbering you (that's my last concern) but the fact that I can't see where they're coming from. This happened to me for a bit in Crysis but I eventually got the hang of it. With FC2 even with those firearm indicators lighting up on your screen with bushes and them shooting at you at such great distances, it's nearly impossible to find where you're being shot from.

Vehicles are great for traveling but 1 bad thing is you're likely to run head to head with an enemy vehicle. If you're the type of guy that likes to do fully stealth missions (like myself) then you'll have a hard time trying to sneak around at night with your car's headlight blasting in full power in the middle of the road.

With crysis most of the objects were breakable and so I decided to try and cut off a small branch from a tree in FC2 to see how well it handles the physics in terms of being more realistic. It turns out my knife just runs right through the branches and not even the leaves fall of... hm.... =/

Heya,

Ok, did some more testing.

The audio in this game simply, straight up, is terribad.

Horrible positioning. Horrible. Voice acting seems to always come in, no matter what direction you're looking. They talk so fast sometimes in an accent that you HAVE to read subtitles. The positioning is just terrible though. You can't tell where a baddie is who's firing at you unless you see muzzle flair in this game. That's freaking stupid. It's like this game doesn't even use sound positioning. I played around with settings. Stereo options just to test it on a `normal' setup; Surround with 5.1. All these new games go straight to the windows sound options to see what they should do with sound, so your speaker selection is important. Farcry2 though doesn't care. You can put it in stereo, 5.1, whatever pleases you, and it's not going to change very much if at all. And in game, your `settings' are as advanced as "volume up/down."

How are people giving these games such high scores and rating when they feel so unfinished? Graphics are nice, not superb, but nice. Game play? Completely washed out and a boring trail mix of Oblivion and Grand Theft Auto. Nothing exciting. Your missions are so bland and silly that it's like "ooook." You spend MORE time driving to your destinations than you do actually accomplishing a mission. You notice your mission is complete often when you just blow up ONE car? You don't even have to fight! You can just go "bang" with a missile and walk away--it's not like you need to mop up the rest, as you don't get money nor experience of any kind. You get a "phone call" maybe. Story? Hahahha. Where? You're a merc. There's no story. Go kill the Jackel. That's your story. Oh and there's so many `russians' and weirdo non-Africans in this game. You start to wonder... why am I even bothering to be in Africa? The game suffers from stupid-puppet syndrome too. Bodies are like rag dolls and crumple in all kinds of silly directions that are unnatural--even for a broken body.

The game is 80% effort put into night/day/sunray effects. 10% game play. 10% lining up of horribad `missions' all designed to get you `diamonds' to buy `guns that don't freaking jam' with.

How does this register as anything above a 6 or 7?

These ratings don't reflect the whole game. They just look at a few screen shots, and rate it. That's stupid.

Cheers,

Do you happen to have a ATI GPU? If so get the latest 8.10 drivers. I had the same things. That fixed it for me.

Not the GPU temp. Its the older drivers, I am guessing he has a ATI GPU. I had the same thing until I updated my drivers.

Now for FC2. Crysis may be the spiritual successor (well rehased game idea with a new suit to play with) but it certainly doesn't have the same open endedness that FC had. FC2 does have the open world that i amazing. Now is it a great game? No. Its a good game. Much like Crysis it got the living shizzz hyped out of it and it failed to deliver.

To me it feels like Oblivion. A world where you start with one mission you have to do for the story then after that you are free to roam the world and do what you want and when you want.

I haven't had much trouble killing in more than 2 shots. But then again I mainly use the sniper rifles so thats a easier kill. I do hate when you have to blow up your car to kill some guys and then have to walk your ass forever back to a safe house to get a car.

Graphics wise, its pretty good. Yes Crysis has some thing better but overall its pretty damn close to Crysis in a few things if you can max it to Ultra High and full AA.

Sound, the sound options do suck. But I don't have any problems with hearing where they are. but then again I have a SB X-Fi that turns headphone sound into full 5.1 and does a damn good job of it too.

Story is pretty good. Not too boring but not too over the top. In fact the story is much more interesting than Crysis. Crysis was too much like FC. In fact there are so many alien FPS games out that it gets really hard to create a unique story for it. But FC2 has a good story and normally you can easily follow it.

Overall I like FC2 better than Crysis. Maybe its because I can run it maxed out (except for AA) and still get 40FPS. Or maybe its the go anywhere and do a mission as you please enviroment. But compared to Crysis its just better in my opinion.

but yea the facial animations blow. hell even HL2 has better facial animations than FC2. Same can be said about Crysis. The facial animations and lypsyncing in both of them just suck.

omg. .. i think ive been ripped off. Even after reading the bad remarks I wasnt prepared for how shabby this game looks and feels. i wish i hadnt opened it now, i guess its too late to take it back. ah heck.

I might give it a chance, but when i game looks and feels this bad, its hard to get passed that.

I think I was a little harsh in my last post, because my initial feelings were of sheer disappointment. I really hate wasting money, so I've stuck with it and now I find Far Cry 2 is growing on me more and more.

I don't change my opinion on the AI being pretty crap if I'm honest, but the game gets much better after a really slow rubbish start. I found myself hooked, so in despite of it's many flaws, Far Cry 2 isn't the terrible game I first thought.

do the graphics grow on you aswell? i want to get into it. when i bought stalker, i remember is uninstalled it aobut 3 times, and kept reading different reviews trying to make me want to play it but eventually i just decided it wasnt for me. this feels similar, although so far ive only played it for 15 mins

well some of their animations weren't done perefecly either. I watched as michelle? (was that her name?) tied her shoe lace and her hand was moving above the tip of her shoe and there were no physical shoe lace that she was holding onto. It looked like she was tieing an invisble knot =S

Yeah its not great by any stretch of the word. It has more bugs than a crack house. The icing on the cake for me was going to UBi forums to try to figure out a bug related issue to find out my ip is banned from there forums! Ive never been there before! Lame.

Only 15 minutes dowesn't do it. I find the graphics quite good considering you never have to load anything unless you take a bus across the map. And in comparison to Crysis, the lighting is much better. The way the sun shines through treens and everything reacts to that light is quite amazing.

But what do you expect? Its in a very remote part of Africa with desert, savanah and a bit of jungle. Deserts are usually quite bare as are Savahnas except Savahnas have a few areas with small to medium trees. The jungles are pretty good and have a more green color to them but the rest is as I would expect, especially since I like in a desert area.

That does suck. Possible someone who had your IP before. IPs renew every month so try next month. Or you could try a release and renew in the command console of Windows and see if you can pick up a new IP. If that fails try going to the Steam forums, http://www.steampowered.com/forums . They have FC2 on Steam so maybe they can help.

My main gripe at the moment is with the shadow scaling. I understand where they are trying to go with it and all, but - alot of the time i cant see anything clearly/or enemies clearly even when they are only a few feet in front of me.

I think the gun/gameplay is actually really decent. Some of the best gun sounds and gun feel ive had in a game in a while. I mean, when i fire my pistol it feels like there is a heavy, powerful slug in the chamber - and not some little bb pellet like in most other fps's i play. I even just whip out the pistol in combat because of this as it feels and sounds like its going to kick ass.

And if you buy the weapons at the shop they dont jam near as much. Play the game before slagging off little petty things. This is deliberate gameplay.
Having grown up in Africa its also important to note that A. Guns will degrade even when not in use - especially if you are near the coast or in a hot-ass desert ( run and sand erosion are hectic there ). But obviously this game increases the effects of this as its a GAME and not real life and you cant be running around for 2 years of Real Life time.

I am actually VERY VERY dissapointed with the lack of destructable fcuking anything in the game. Bushes just bounce around and i cant destoy much at all. Although its not console port - you can definately feel where they nerfed certain gameplay aspects so that it could work on the god damn consoles.

But then again - i only payed £26 for the game and will only play it till Fallout 3 arrives on my doorstep tomorrow :)

I am glad, that some of you liked it, because I was beginning to feel sorry for the game. I just couldn't do it anymore. I couldn't handle the arcade feel of it. You are right we shouldn't compare to Crysis and I think Crysis and COD4 has spoiled me for good. So I had to take it back. Guess what though. I returned it for Warhead. Should be a good trade.

I dont understand this type of behavior at all. If i was an electronics store i would tell you hell no you opened the box, it works? Then you bought it, you keep it.

Do you take a music CD back if you dont like it overall?
Do you take a book back if you didnt like how it ends?
Do you ask for a refund at the movies if the movie sucked?

It is not a faulty product. You just dont like it. That is a personal preference and should not qualify as a reason to return a game. I dont know how you were able to return that game. Either you lied or the store is retarded for letting you exchange it. Either way, i would feel like a cheap a$$ motherF*1Ck3r for trying to pull that off.

You bought the game, you didnt like it, tough sh!t you should have made a more intelligent purchase.

The reason this happens is because there are no demo available. Years ago, free demos for new games is the rule, nowdays, it's the exception. Naturally, when the product doesn't live up to the hype, people feel deceived. A lot of people actually download pirated copies for demo purposes, and buy only if they like it. 😛

For music, there's radio, for books, there are plot summaries, for movies, there are trailers. For games, there used to be demos. There are still game reviews, but those are someone else's opinions, and beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
