mm ..only drive I ever had a problem installing Linux on was a very old SCSI drive that probably had a access time aroun 20ms and str of 3MB/s, needless to say I don't think it would be happy with many of today's operating systems on it.

***Hey I run Intel... but let's get real***

The $64,000 question is...SCSI or IDE.

IDE: definately the IBM 75GXP far and away the current best

SCSI: id say the Quantum Atlas as well. I was impressed at first with the Seagate Cheetah 15k seek times, but ive since heard alot of moans and groans about heads and software that were all just holdovers from the last generation of Seagate drives. Also that Fujitsu Tom just reviewed looks pretty dandy, in particular with Heat and Sound issues, not to mention obvious speed advnatage of IDE.

Id say definately dont worry about which OS your gonna use, AFAIK all the new reasonably high end ones out there can handle linux. Its all the questions after that about waht you want form a HD is where the fun begins heheh
