so games crashing, a few bsod's, and replaced gpu (only to have problem still exist) later i decided to open up my psu convinced it's the culprit...and there's this melty yellow goop on a lot of the caps and such. I am going to replace the psu but just wondering if i should cease using this immediatley and if so what are the chances these issues have permenantly damaged my new gpu and/or the original mobo/cpu? I need my pc and cannot afford to spend the $60 or so it needed for the Corsair psu you guys always recommend.

thanks in advance and sorry for the repost but i was overly long winded in the last one and got few answers.

yes a faulty 12volt rail can damage your video card, cpu and motherboard along with taking out the psu.

if you want to take the risk since your a hairline within specs; that is up to you to decide, it would not be appropriate for anyone to...

That's actually non-conductive glue. The capacitors seem to be in good shape from what I can tell. I'm not saying it's not the psu.

edit: Is there a capacitor just to the right of the red wire?. Next to the coil?.

Omg don't tell me the psu isn't jacked. That only leaves the Cpu. I'm going tomorrow to replace the psu and if it doesn't fix these issues the computer is done. I'm no longer wasting money on it.

i'm not sure what to do at this point. I have spent over $550 for a $400 rig trying to crack the instability in gaming and I'm stumped.

I just ran prime95 on stock cpu and this occurred on only 1 core:

[Mon Mar 26 01:38:22 2012]
FATAL ERROR: Final result was 00000000, expected: 8C481635.
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.

I forgot the brand of PSU but it's a random no namer me thinks. It's very old - about 5 years. My dad gave me an old computer but claimed he rarely used it as he had a better one. I then replaced the mobo/cpu/ram/gpu but left the HDD and PSU in the case to save $$. it's a 680w psu so i figured it's fine. All signs point to PSU. I only ran 2 passes of the ram but no issues there on memtest86 bootable. I'm going to run more but I fear the faulty psu may cause hardware issues across the board. I think I should replace the psu before running any other diagnostics. Unless you guys feel otherwise.

oh and I ran Blended test of prime95. Twice it failed on 2 different cores. 2nd the first time and 3rd the second time. Core is not unlocked. So far only programs that crash are games but then once the game crashes i then lose Google Chrome and Asus Ai Suite. PC must be rebooted to use other programs. This sounds like psu issues as the psu overheats under load and then nothing works fine until it's turned off and reset.

I was looking at that one too. I heard LEPA is good. I checked on here and a few forum members said OK. Although it concerned me it was switchable. The Basiq just looks so....basic. I have a black case and the silver PSU would look ugly but it's worth it for a good yet inexpensive psu that won't f**k up

Not necessarily, but it's not a good sign. ATX 12V specifies that voltages on all rails mut be +- 5%...so your voltages are still within spec (minimum on the 12V rail is 11.4V). On the other hand, if you're getting that drop simply from plugging in wi-fi, then I imagine you're getting much larger drops when gaming. What's your 12V when gaming/running stress stest?

Ok I doubt i'll get an answer as I've pretty much beat this issue like a dead horse but here goes - so i couldn't get the new psu - i am horribly broke and the money I lined up for the thing fell through (been a very irritating day and I hate craigslist - people are so friggin flaky!)

but i gotsta enjoy my Amalur - i tried playing on 1920/1080 which is so beautiful i can't believe my eyes - watched in horror as my 12v went down to 11.58v at one point - still above .5v window. I'm just concerned that playing games with the psu in this condition will damage my new GPU or my cpu/mobo....should i be worried about this or playing now and again until I can replace this thing in a few days?

nutshell - can a faulty 12v rail like this damage my gpu, cpu, and/or mobo at this point?

wouldn't it be worth $50 and a bit of time getting a better PSU to enjoy gaming with confidence and not worry about taking out $200+ of components?

I am going to replace ASAP. I got a guy lined up to buy a motocycle jacket from me tomorrow for $75 - if he doesn't flake. I don't plan on keeping it I was just wondering if 1-2 days of playing is an issue. I can see from your responses that it is an issue so i'll be shutting this PC down until I can replace the psu :(

Last ?: is it possible the PSU has caused irreparable damage already? what are the chances that a new psu won't completely resolve my issues?

if it still boots, its looking good but you really won't be able to tell until you swap psu and put a load on the rig.

ok thanks for all the help guys. I know it's sad I can't just replace this psu right now and it has caused lotsa arguments between my wife and I - but after a decade of steady work making good $$ i find myself unemployed, broke, and without health insurance - and my wife has MS. So yeah - things suck right now and I can't even escape into my games for relief. that REALLY blows.

ok sob story over - thanks again. at least i'm relearning a lot about pc's which always helps in the job market. To think I'm the guy people in my last job always came to for tech support :)

oh its kind of a toss up of best answer - looniam you win ;)

OK! Appears isue has been fixed with new psu! woohoo. 12v rail reads fine. Installed and booted no prob. Playing Skyrim on ultra w/ high res and looks amazing. Mass Effect 3 on 1920/1080 ran with little to no stutter on high. I'm so happy! thanks again for the help!

After 5 mo's of anguish I FINALLY have a stable rig - knock on wood ;)

EDIT: AAAAAARRRGGGHHH!!!! it happened AGAIN!!! wtf is wrong this thing!?!?!?!

replaced the gpu and psu...that leaves ram, hdd, and/or cpu/mobo. I'm gonna run memtest86 again and prime95. Either way i'm tapped. I'll just have to live with it.
