File sort order in dialog window

When I do an OPEN or SAVE AS in most applications (not microsoft office
apps) the file list is not sorted by filename. The default sort order
appears to be by date. How do I fix this? I'm running XP home.

Thanks,

Open a folder window (not a dialog) on a file folder (not a special folder), sort how you want, Ctrl + Close button on the titlebar.

This sets the system default sort. Many other settings override it for folder windows but it's the only setting dialogs read.

Tried that, does not work. Do I need to restart/reboot?

Thanks,

Try a Google search for "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile"
There's stacks of stuff there.

You're right. I tried it again and it worked. I set the sort order, then
went to "folder options" and picked "apply to all folders", then did
CTRL-close.

Thanks,
