WinXP is refusing to delete a file claiming it is in use when it's not. I began downloading a rather large .exe (500 meg) and cancelled it shortly after the download began due to the host being incredibly slow. So the unfinished file sits on my desktop and windows will not let me remove it, rename it, cut it, copy it or modify it in anyway. The file is taking up almost no space, its just an eyesore. Any suggestions on removing it?

I'm new to WinXP but I've been digging around and maybe system restore will help.
Go to "help and support center" under help and support resorces, point to system restore and click.
If my understanding is correct about this feature you can check how often your system is setup to create a system restore point.I suggest every day.

The files been around for too long to bother with a restore, but that wouldve been a good suggestion had I thought of it the day it happened.

Can you change its permission so your account has full- control?

 Good or Bad have no meaning at all, depends on what your point of view is.

i have had that problem in the past, sometimes due to a file name being too long for windows to handle, have u tried dragging and dropping it into a folder and then deleting the folder?

I used the del command at the prompt and that worked. I dont know if its coincidence but the file name was very long as someone mentioned. In the future there are a couple programs I found that are handy when you run into this problem, which apparently isnt that uncommon. heres a link to dellater.exe http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=dellater

What you might want to try doing is go into safe mode with minimum settings and try deleting it. I found that to be very useful when I can't delete something as well.

When in trouble, reboot into safe mode and then should be able to trash it. Some background app probably is using it.
