Firewire chip burn

Hi there,

I just cleaned my computer like I do every year and this year, today; I was in a hurry and connected the front USB to Firewire port on the motherboard. I was so stupid (in a hurry to get to work, but still stupid) and tried switched the computer ON twice. Ok now the chip next to the firewire is burned, but the mobo works fine from what was able to see in 5 minutes run after I connected the cable corect.
Q: If the mobo runs and I do not need the firewire port can I expect problems in the near future? I do not have the money now to change the mobo. Maybe in few months.

well a power surge probably killed the chip. there may have been some other unknown damage. my suggestion is to run some stress tests on the system and see if they reveal anything.

But by stressing the computer isn`t there a chance to do more damage? (I am especially afraid for CPU, RAM, and GPU which are all new :|)

Heres the thing, when you burn a chip like that its still linked to the rest of the board's circuitry. That said it could work perfectly fine for years.... or it could continue to deteriorate. Its literally a tossup there is no way to know for sure.

I would stress test it as well, it likely won't damage your other hardware, but that said if the board is going to fail that will let you know sooner than later.

yes.
if there is damage it is done and any further use will only manifest as more errors/instability.
Stressing the system will let you know, fairly quickly if the system can be relied upon.
I meant to say if it were me, not my suggestion.
if it were me I'd stress the system <-clarification
I would still suggest it IF you need the peace of mind that it's healthy enough to work on.

The BurnInTest standard test (2D graphics, CPU, HDD, Network, Sound, RAM, DVD, Temperature) passed with no errors. And I was looking at the mobo the whole time and didn`t see any "sparks". What should I do next? Any tests?
