Flat CRT's?

When are Flat CRT's supposed to be out. Not talking about flat as in the screen, but flat as in less depth (dimension wise).

You cannot make flat CRTs because the phosphor guns can only be made so small. Away, why would you want a Flat when you can have a flicker-free, radiation-free Flat-panel LCD?

Not true. Candescent technologies have been working on this technology for some time now.

To answer your question, Dont hold your breath. In december 2001 I found the following news article.

Article 1 of 3, Article ID: 0112130119

Published on December 11, 2001, San Jose Mercury News (CA)

CANDESCENT ABANDONS ITS GRAND PLANS
PRODUCT SHIFTED

50 LET GO

San Jose's Candescent Technologies, a designer of high-tech flat-panel displays that raised more than $600 million in venture capital, is abandoning plans to make its product -- becoming one of the largest start-ups to fizzle in Silicon Valley history.

The company laid off at least 50 of its approximately 100 workers last week, and is now slimming down to a remnant of its former self to license its technology to anyone who will buy it, company leaders and investors confirmed.

I was really hoping this technology would be a sucess.

Wow! That's amazing! How do they do that? But I still don't see the point when you have Flatpanel LCD! I assume they monitors would be able to emit their own light, or will they need a backlight like LCDs?

I understand the point. A big drawback to today’s LCD technology is the reduced color gamut as compared to a CRT. Their technology used phosphors like CRT, thus the color gamut is equal to a CRT.

How they do it, a CRT uses 3 cathodes one each for the color, they use multiple cold cathodes arranged in a matrix like the cells of an LCD monitor. Each cell having multiple cathodes per pixel. These are placed close to and directly behind each phosphor. Another benefit is no geometric distortion, like a CRT.
