Is overclocking my Asus GTX460 going to produce loads more folding points?

I guess the question is "Is it worth it from a points point if view"

Anyone got any stats for default and overclocked?

Thanks [:jaydeejohn:5]

It "was" inevitable.

Well thats why your passing to me so well.

Anyways, would overclocking help? yes.

Any stats on the Gtx 460? yes

Interesting, mines the Asus and is a cool runner so possible voltage increase. I don't use the PC for gaming and OC ing graphics cards isn't something I have done too often but I think I'll give it a go without overvolting and see what the results yield.

Cheers [:bohleyk:1]

Too much power consumption, I'd just like to see the ATI client come up and put up numbers, the 6850 seems like a promising prospect if ATI's client comes out. Especially since the 6850 is an "Overclocking Monster" said Hardwarecanucks.

I'd rather see 5870 numbers, the 6k series actually lost processing speed since AMD made the GPUs more even for gaming, unless the stream processors don't help folding performance.

Looks like we will be overtaken before we overtake.

10,000,000 points, I seen it once...in a dream...Next target Top 100. :sol:

What does the ns/day stand for on the Nvidea gpu client.

I slightly overclocked my GTX460 and it went fron 1241 - 1506 ns/day??

Apologies for all the questions at the mo, I could trail the net for answers but its just easier to ask here [:bohleyk:1]

-1,000,000 points is my "goal", after that, no more 24/7. aznshinobi - i remember being excited that you (and i) were for passing the 100k mark.

-looks like we'll be going -2, +1, -1, +3, -1, +1 --> net +1 in the next.... 6.9 MONTHS!!! lol.

-It looks like Duane_100 has some new hardware...we were duking it out in the 16-17k 24hr range -> now he's at 20k/day.

-they definitely need a new ATI client. The 5xxx series are pretty popular cards....all that GPU power not being used... :/

-beano - you need to get out more if you're dreaming about folding points... lol. just kidding - keep folding!!!
Found this on foldingforums:

ns/day : a WU is a part of simulation which is representing a certain amount of time. For example, a 1 000 ns simulation divided in 100 WU will make a single WU represents 10 ns. If you're folding one WU per day, you'll produce 10 ns/day ... two WU per day, 20 ns/day ... this value (ns/day) will vary, depending on the complexity of the protein (more atom typically means more iteration between two states of the protein, which means less ns/day).

Nice target a cool million.

This is true, I'm also dreaming about another GTX460, which leads me nicely to my next round of Q&A 😀 -

1. Have you OC'd your 460 yet and if so what did you achieve?
2. Is it worth OC ing the memory from a folding point of view?
3. Does running an OC'd card pose any more possible problems than a default one if no voltage increase?
4. If someone was to have 2 460's and was just using them for folding would they set them up as separate cards or SLI for the highest points return?

You mean this isn't your explanation 😀 So what does ns/day mean then?? 😱

Make your own points... I had to. :)

In fact, back when I started folding we had to walk to school and back home every day in the snow, up hill... both ways. 😱

Back when I started it seems like 200 points in a day was a good day. I would get these 300 point WUs that would take 3 or 4 days to process on the XP 2400 CPUs, even longer on the XP 1800s. :??:

Had a couple of P3 800s going too, they were great producers. Over 60 points a day each. :wahoo: I also had 5 Celeron 400s that made up the backbone folding 24/7. They could produce 45 PPD each. 😀 It took a while but I finally got a P4 2.8 Ghz that would crank out over 100 PPD all by its self.

At the peak, last fall, I had 16 machines folding full time. :sol:

I guess it was last winter when I permanently shut off anything that produced less than 100 PPD. :pfff: Then in late spring I shut off all remaining single core machines, those P4s produced a lot of heat. :fou:

Now it's only SMP and GPU. 😉 Which reminds me, I had a GF 9600 GSO bite the dust a couple of months ago. Got to get it returned, it's only a year old and is still under warranty. 3500 PPD is nothing to scoff at.

Well i would have to say yes, as i just started my SMP2 client up again and i got an A3 instantly. You may of accidently deleted one of the "-smp" flags. :??:

first question

Which ubuntu 10 do you have? 10.04 or 10.10?

Reason i ask is because F@H has issues with both of them and the each have different problems.

10.04:

10.10:

Beyond that, you'll have to follow the guide that F@H provides as it's been far to many months since i've touch ubuntu for F@H.

Either that, run a windows SMP2 client in a program call WINE

Sorry i cant help any more than this. 🙁

shovenose - Thanks, I like to learn something new everyday, unfortunately I forget more than I learn 😀

😱 Deffinitly some good PPD numbers are already showing up for the GTX 580.

Hey warmon, I overclocked my GTX460 and these are the results.

Default- Core 700 - Shader 1400 - Mem 1840

OC'd - Core 875 - Shader 1750 - Mem 2110 no voltage increase.

PPD on HFM have gone from 9660 - 15369, can this be right?

ns/day on display have gone from 1424 - 1675.

She is smokin but still running a c :sol: :sol: l 53C under load.

912pt work units are taking around 1hr 20mins, before it was around 1hr 40mins.

seeker - have you tried yours yet?

:fou: Keep the Red Rocket at bay, fold all day! :fou:

Looking at the link warmon posted about 10.10, it looks like the solution is pretty simple, or at least easy. If you need help understanding the linux commands, ask away and I'll see what I can do. I'll throw 10.10 into my torrent queu when I get home, so I can make a virtualbox install and try stuff out. I'm waiting on Mint 10 for an actual hard drive install of the latest Ubuntu family.
