Just realised I've been down clocking the wrong card 😳

Happened again

Still havent RMA'd my card. Will do this weekend. Managed to get it to replicate the sound when using Furmark.

Not sure how they would react to me being like, makes noises when F@H. Would GPU manufactureres count that as normal use? I know EVGA would but others are less reliable.

That was my thinking. When the card is under load, it makes a loud whirling noise when passing through 1800 rpm. Above and below this is fine, sometimes it sits at 1800 rpm when it knows I am trying to get to sleep.

Playing with fan settings with an idle card has no effect, has to be under load.

Edit: Punctuation.

I have had 2 more C++crashes which resulted in losing the units I was folding and downloading 3 work units per CPU/GPU. The first time I let them run, but points suffered. The second time I deleted all slots to send the work units back.

On the Advanced Control you can click on the work unit number on the right hand side of the screen to bring up a web page with details of the project.

So took it into the reseller and they could not fault it. Tested for 40 mins no issue. Back in my PC, took 30s before it did it. Definitely one of the fans.

Possibly resonate frequency? I might do a bit more testing before taking my whole rig back in so they can see it.

I have not heard that for fan noise, but I do know that sometimes graphics card electrical noise is an interaction between the card and the PSU. Switch out one and it may go away. Perhaps something similar in your case? Who knows. I've got several rattles, squeaks, chatters, etc. Run 'em till they blow up I say!

My PNY 460 made a semi high pitched whine between 57% and 62% fan speeds. But if I put my finger on the fan shroud and pushed up ever so slightly it went away.
My solution was to bend a pci slot cover to support and slightly push the shroud up on the end near the PCIE power connectors . The end touching the card is wrapped in black electrical tape.
My motherboard tray has a few extra screw holes along the front edge of the motherboard. And one was at just the right spot just below the card.

Not the most elegant solution but it worked.

Resonating PC parts? Sounds like a genius speaker design or something...

You could try putting cardboard barriers between the parts as a test to see if that reduces the sound. If it does, it could be resonance. If not, then that's out of the question... right?

So it seems that our overall points have gone down over time.

This seems to be an overall trend for all teams. Has this decline for the other teams been happening for a while or is everyone moving to the Curecoin team?

Well it is summer, folding has always had a moderate seasonal trend.

[H] plummeted during the spring.

Even Curecoin has been up and down.

I've switched some of my systems over to BOINC to have a little fun diversifying (that's a fun 'buzz word'). So I have dropped some for summer as well. And I have been doing a bunch of ocore testing as well, which was only fake points (for now at least). And I purposefully set one of my Bigadv to SMP to help work through the backlog there.

Hmm that makes sense.

Really is a shame that we still cannot 'advertise' folding on this forum.

@JPN me neither but it would be a nice excuse to upgrade. Seems that the 1900 rpms seems to not play nicely with the case. With the 4th side on the case it happens a lot less.

My case exhaust fan died last night. It has been acting up for a few weeks with a random loud squeal that I could remedy with some 'percussive maintenance' but that didn't help yesterday.

I was hoping the flimsy case had warped and was rubbing on the fan blades so I would have an excuse to toss the case and buy something better. Unfortunately when I took everything apart I found no evidence of rubbing and the fan hub was exceptionally hot so I now think it has a bad bearing.

I had another fan on hand that has roughly 2/3 the airflow rating of the one that died so I am running again. I am not running my GPUs right now because of the heat but I am sure I will have to re-evaluate my cooling once they come back into play this fall.

I also had somewhat wondered if I were wasting my time - I know I am not producing big numbers. I do have some more resources coming on line soon, but just have not gotten to it yet. my biggest question is more about if it is actually helping or should I look for a project with more direct impact?
Also, a little advertising would be good, as everyone likes to be part of something people are interested in or excited about.

I think of these projects as grinding for science. Your contribution may not seem like much but over time it adds up and it all furthers our understanding of complex questions.

In the end you need to donate to a cause that you consider important. I used to run SETI@home but I felt it was superfluous to spend time analyzing background noise from space when people are dying every day from diseases we don't entirely understand.

We all fold or participate in distributed computing for varying reasons.
I like others lost a very good friend and family member to Alzheimer's.
It is something that I would not wish upon my worst enemy . ( If I had any.)
To see a brilliant mind degrade back to Basic instincts, and lose all knowledge of the world except the strongest and most distinct childhood memories is painful at best to see and experience .
So now I fold with everything I have that is at least decent in power/PPD.
