Unfortunate that it has to be restricted. I'm not sure I see how attractive it's going to be if the people we're advertising it to can't join in.

Not that I don't get the concern about us perhaps walking all over Anandtech.

Normally we're pretty comparable teams. Probably shows how little attention folding has had on our forums, if there are ~7 times as many users but our folding teams are pretty evenly matched.

My opinion:

I like the idea of using the entire team but applying a handicap. In the end we want to grow the teams and the sites through the publicity of the competition. The "winning" team should be the one who grows the most during the competition relative to the baseline.

Unfortunate that it has to be restricted.

Doesn't necessarily have to be. It was an idea I was floating around, given the difference in community size. However, if everybody is up for a free-for-all, where non-affiliated members can jump into the team and contribute (and it's sounding, from both sides, like this is the preferred option), we will happily go with that. It's meant as a friendly competition for the sake of bragging rights, so there isn't too much at stake besides pride.

Personally, I'm amenable to the free-for-all, as that will make it much easier to bring newcomers into the world of folding.

It is always a puzzle when it comes to making it a fair competition between 2 (or more) different size teams. This is why the chimp-challenge always had a ton of arguments between the various Major competing teams.

Hears a list that i can think of that we can use to help make things work that i've seen from other forums for their competitions. (Most of them have already been mentioned).

*Free-for-all points:
Pro: Allows everyone to join on competing teams, no worry of user limits, easy to manage on figuring out the winner.
Con: Typically keeps smaller teams away as there's no chance of winning for them.

*Locking it to certain users:
Pro: Keeps the number of users the same and most likely users that are selected with similar point output
Con: No Incentive for new people to join the teams if it locked down.

*Hard Handicap:
Pro: allows everyone on all competing teams to compete, allows smaller team to have a chance of winning, and gives incentive to new people to join a teams.
Con: Could give smaller team a advantage in scoring if they have a lot non-affiliated members help them.

*Dynamic Handicap:
Pro: Same Pros as the hard handicap but handicap should be flexible base on various values (number of users, amount of points earned, ect) during the competition and have a set schedule for when collecting that data. Should Negate a smaller team from gaining an advantage from having addition members coming on board.

Con: Would be the most difficult to setup and manage. Also could be easily manipulated depending on the values and formula used.

Now for me, I like the idea of a dynamic handicap. It should negate the issues of a smaller team out scoring a bigger team with outside help but it should allow them compete on a level playing field. All the while allowing everyone in all teams compete.

Although that sheer work....

The big questions would be:

What would the values be that would determine the handy cap? Points earned that day and number of users?

What formula would work best for a dynamic scoring system?

How often would the handicap ratio change and at what time? Once a day @ Midnight EST ?

Who would do the adjusting? Having some people not affiliated with either team (maybe a staff member at Purch?) would eliminate the possibly of the scores being influenced.

How would the scoring work? Could base it something like 1M Folding points (after handicap is applied) = 1 point for that day (would make it easier to add up scores at the end with it being dynamic) or we just use the folding points.

For me, a simple formula on this kind of setup would dominantly be based on the the number of active user. (Although i would assume a more complex formula would be needed for this competition.)

*note: My mind isn't working properly with math at this late hour for me.... so.... I may got something majorly wrong with this formula.

(small team users)/(large team users) = (100 - (% number got) = handicap)
(large team day points) * (handicap) = (points difference)
((large team day points)- (points difference) = adjusted points

(points of team that day (and after large team adjusting)) = (Value Score)

So if Toms was in the competition yesterday it would look something like this. (Using today's users as i didn't see what the number of users was yesterday)
*Grabbing these numbers off EoC stats.

(Anand) / (Toms) (Handicap)
28 / 43 = 0.65 (100-65=35)

(Toms points) * Handicap = (point difference)
12,547,359 * 35% = 4,391,575.65

(Toms points)-(Difference)= (Tom's Adjusted points)
12,547,359 - 4,391,575.65 = 8,155,783.35

Assuming a score of 1M points = a score of 1 Purch Point (See what i did there?)

Tom's would of had 8.2 Purch Points
Anand would of had 6.4 Purch Points (with them having a score of 6,383,718 points yesterday)

this would allow user total manipulation..... but a better formula could mitigate that...

Idk, what you guys think?

In the end it is all about growing teams and creating more awareness for Folding@ Home.

To me it does not matter if we win or lose(we all want to be winners), if we grow our folding teams.
The big winner in all of this is everyone.

Hey guys, as a heads up, AT has gotten their forum announcement for this up already: https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/11th-annual-folding-home-holiday-season-3-way-race.2489602/

As you'll see, they're running a few others concurrently with this. They've included a proposed date and time for ours; that was brought up here as well but never finalized, so if this needs to be adjusted, please make your voices heard soon.

We'll be going with the free-for-all format for the sake of simplicity and accessibility. It may hand the advantage to TH in terms of sheer size, but that just means you guys will be held to higher standards. Don't let them outclass you!

If you'd like to get a separate post for this stickied, be my guest. (As I'm sure you all know, we have all kinds of issues with this particular thread which unfortunately are not going to be solved)

As it gets closer to the start date, we'll get a news post up on the site's front page, so please take a little time to gussy up the folding guides/introductions as we'll want to link back to those.

Hey guys, any more thoughts on this throw down with AT? Are we going to go for a mass free for all or just a small number against a small number of them? I need to let Tits know in the next couple of days so that "arrangements" can be made.

I'm all for the "Free for all" approach myself, just let the numbers do the talking. 😀

I forgot to mention that I have been over in the UK for the past several days (and will remain for several more). Now that I am over here though, I can confirm it is reasonably cool, so you Brits have no excuse if you aren't folding at 110% 😛

And of course if any of my systems go down, I won't be fixing them for a bit.

At the speed he is moving I would almost be afraid to moon him.
Probably the best I could do is Fart is his general direction as he blows by!
