Hi, Im an 18 year old that has been planning to build a system for college for about a year now. I've narrowed my months of research down to two ideal systems. But now with the new PCIexpress and nforce4 and so much more coming out, im lost in what to do. Im a big gamer so I do want a computer good for that. Anyways Im curious what you fellas think are the best things to part together if your spending $1800 (2 years of summer work.)

PCIex and Nforce4 are not worth it, on your budget. If you live in the US, look to newegg or check out kabob's deals http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=188368#188368 Iwould get the Amd system, because prescott scares me, and I dont like the intel mobo, but you are the one who's paying.
The big ticket item should be the graphics card, the 6800 series looks good.
I would get a seagate pata drive, because they are fast, reliable and cheap.
You might as well get a DVD burner, they are so cheap now. Liteon is good, LG is also fine.

I'd buy a car.

Hmm well thanks for those suggestions, I will have to look into some of those parts in detail. I do like AMD for gaming and their bench marks are up to par, but I do keep reading that intel is going to be the top dog soon.

Where have you heard this???

Intel and AMD are now head to head. I don't think we will ever see a HUGE dominance of neither AMD or Intel in the next couple of year. Both company are facing problems in their fabrication process. Intel have difficulty to push to the market their fastest CPU and AMD have yet to show the world their 90nm process at 2.6GHz or higher speed... They haven't yet announced 90nm CPU launch.

Well, that's still a lot of money to spend on a system, especially when you're going to the land of beer and women.
