Foxconn is not thinking this through logically as a business. Foxconn provides their workers with accomodations, food, entertainment, and a wage for work. The wages they recieve is ontop of what most of us spend our entire earnings on. If I was Foxconn, I would do things differently to promote the most proven success method.
I would give the 30% wage, and give better living conditions. It would be cheaper to go through 1 time upgrades to the facility, and a marginal increase in food to create a proper diet then it would to give a 66% increase on wages for everyone. Finally, I would offer the 66% of wages to the top 10% of employees who do the best quality work at the pace of the factory. Thats how you incentivize the American way, the US is still the country with the longest amount of hours logged in on average.

Seems in line to me. I think what needs to be addressed here is that people should be paid for time spent. Eight hours minimum, and as much overtime as you want. Theres no reason to be a sweatshop when plenty of people would be happy to make less in exchange for having someone else take those hours.

To those who scoff at a pay raise as a realistic solution, remember that most of these workers were being pressured into overtime because they couldn't afford to only work "normal" hours. If this allows many to work reasonable shifts, and more workers get hired to cover the missing hours, it could actually be a WIN. At the very least, a step in the right direction.

This is probably best news i heard in months, sure its not alot of money, but if they could save some up to leave the work later and return home - then this gives more purpose for their hardship.

Now dont forget to keep using the same picture for any foxconn article years ahead, hell, use it on apple articles too, i'd lol

Once again, it's not about foxcoon only. It's The whole country of China. That's why everything is made in that country. The production costs are extremely low. part of that is because the awful low salaries.

Well at least those people had not died in vain. I think that the increase in wage will decrease the suicides not because there quality of life has increase tremendously but because it provides some hope of improvement whereas beforehand there was none.

As many users commented I think that giving the possibility to establish human relationships on work, would improve the moods of most employees. There are treating their workers as if they are machines but the truth is that humans have feelings and emotions and need to interact with other people to feel happy.

[citation][nom]mrubermonkey[/nom]Wow $293 per month. I think I just eat and drink that much consumables per month. Maybe if they save up for two months they can afford a PlayStation 3 and a game.[/citation]

THATS MAINLAND CHINA... Is like saying that a starving Sudanese would consider buying a BMW. You guys seriously need to think a little more. Not every country is a rich western democracy. If they are paid too much the sweatshops will move to a poorer country and they'll end up farming rice 16 hours a day 7 days a week for nothing but survival.

Bingo, that and we sell them raw materials dirt cheap. Most people commenting here don't have a clue. This is the way manufacturing is done in China. You are basically held prisoner at these facilities. During the Chinese New Year, everything shuts down for a month. People are allowed to leave the factories and go home. This is where the problem starts, once they leave, most won't return to the same place hoping to find something better somewhere else. A mass hiring phase starts. Brokers who import goods from China know all about this, and plan for it. There is almost a 2 month period during late winter that nothing comes out of China during this holiday, "lets all try to find something a little better when we return to work" phase each year. Funny how the first pay raise coincided with the mass return to work. Probably HAD to do it to attract any return employees. This is not just Foxconn people, Foxconn just got unlucky enough to get picked on by the media. This is day to day life in the Chinese workplace. That why I can import goods, pay huge duties and taxes, huge ocean freight shipping fees, and still end up with goods costing half what they do to manufacture here in the states. It is simply amazing how cheap this stuff is coming in unless you are in the import business and do it. But don't blame me for importing, this is what YOU CONSUMERS want. Cheap, cheap, cheap. Anyway, anyplace, anyhow, CHEAP.
But why should we care about these poor underpaid overworked women and children? All we Americans want is cheaper products, and by golly if we have to buy Chinese to get it, that is what we will do! Who cares about the toil, sweat, and repression of people half way around the world. I'll shop at Wal-Mart and get a great deal on my new big screen LCD TV! That is all we care about, and that is where we will spend our money.

thats all good and well, but people aren't jumping off buildings because they're paychecks are small. they're jumping because their life is bleak and dismal. foxconn - you need to invest in community activities and restructure employee assignments. people need to do different activities throughout the day. performing the same task for 12 hours straight everyday will drive anyone insane.

They are overworked and under-payed. As someone else noted, the math in this article doesn't add up.

The newest raise would boost pay to $293
Before the raises they were making $132 a week which equals $528

Now, unless China's months consist of 1-2 weeks they are being swindled by the evil Execs again!! OH the inhumanity!! Those damn dirty Execs.

[citation][nom]duk3[/nom]This kind of a pay raise shows you how much these workers were being cheated.[/citation]

With all things considered, it's probably still nothing but a spit in the bucket for the business itself, probably affected profit margins by

Take into account that room & board are covered, that the cost of living is significantly lower there, and these people have no formal education and they pretty much hit the jackpot for a job... as others have said, they should be allowed to talk and use the restroom when they need to, but $$ wise this is a sweet gig and you are fools to denounce it.

review em? they should all get raises for living through this sh*t.. yea did u attempt or commit suicide? no ok well heres ur raise. Money... the root of all evil, besides hitler

This is not enough.. (They don't need pay increases)
They need to be treated like humans.

-They need to be allow to talk to each other and socialize.
-If you are working for 12 hours you need to be allowed to sit. 12 hours of standing it torcher.
-Also shorter days should be allowed.
-Better yet give these people paid vacation. A few days off here and there can allow them to enjoy that raise.

Anybody assuming Foxconn only makes motherboards is very incorrect. Foxconn manufactures parts for pretty much the whole electronics industry. 300,000 people are not just making motherboards. Sony utilizes Foxconn parts in most of its electronic devices.

FoxConn needs to know that it's not all about money. It's about the work environment. The people said they feel their life is pointless because of the work environment. Bathroom breaks are restricted and you can't socialize, the workers are no robots. Makes me want to reach out and slap them with a large trout.

Yes, it's a shame that working conditions are awful there. Nevertheless, this is a start in the right direction.

A shame that people support apple, which is where these poor workers work.

It was said at the top of the article " boost wages by up to 66 percent to 2,000 yuan per month " but then you say "Prior to the raise, workers were earning 900 yuan ($132 USD) a week. so before the raise they were making 3600 yuan a month, now they only make 2000?

[citation][nom]vicsrealms[/nom]Hmm, this makes me happy that I'm not a fan of Foxconn motherboards. As well as thankful, that I don't hear this from Gigabyte or MSI my other two motherboard companies. Plus, Asus who I have had a great streak with laptops.[/citation]
You're a little ignorant, almost all motherboards have Foxconn components, a lot of motherboard manufacturers use Foxconn (like EVGA for example), Apple uses Foxconn for your iPad, iPhone, MacBooks and everything else, nVidia and ATi have used Foxconn in the past to build their cards, HP and Foxconn are about one and the same, they share manufacturing plants, more then half the laptops in the world are build by Foxconn.

A very small number of products have a Foxconn badge on them, the rest have badges from "manufacturers" you wouldn't even believe (like Apple). Chances are half of the gear you own is built by Foxconn or uses Foxconn components.

Apple is very adamant about their "values" and "principles" and yet they have no problem with how workers are being treated in their Foxconn plants.

Human life is cheap, "Apple principles" and "Apple values" are priceless, Steve Jobs said he'd prefer to quit his job before considering bending hi's precious company values (he said this when interviewed about the iPhone4/Gizmodo scandal).

I agree and I still won't buy shady Apple products. eff that.

Jackass. They start heading in the right direction and that's your comment?
