Bottom-line I'm building a VR rig, as my wife use my current computer and gaming doesn't happen. Is building an 4690K a downgrade from a 2600K, worth it over a i7-6700K/i5-6600K (costs addition $250-$350, +) or not worth it at all?

Current rig:
I7-2600K (4.2 on air)
Asrocks Z68 MB (PCI-E 2.0)
16GB G.Skill 1866 (CAS-9)
MSI 980 4G (was going to drop the 1080 in.
EVO 850 (500GB)

Proposed rig (small form factor):
I5-4690K (4.0+ on Corsair water or air) FREE, NIB
Asrocks Z97M Pro 4 or GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 (both cheap)
16GB G.Skill 2133 (CAS 9 or 10)
ASUS ROG STIRX 1080
EVO 850 (500GB)
Thermaltake V21
Corsair RM750

absolutely worth it, get a decent z97 board and have fun ( the two there will not really ever allow overclocking, and a chip like that is just begging to be OCed), that is pretty much as good as the i5 6600K and as gaming still does not yet make sue of mroe than 4 cores, an i5 is great for gaming. if you can get the cas 9 ram for say under $15 more, grab it, it never hurts to have better RAM. good power supply choice.

I wish i could get a free one of those.

Both the Asrocks Z97M Pro4 and Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 are Z97m chipsets. I couldn't reach 4.4 ghz on them?

I know the Asrocks Z97m Pro4 is only 4 phase.

you might, but that could be asking a lot on the board, and requiring higher than wanted voltages and thus heat for the given speed. if you are willing to go with a full size motherboard, then this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157503 will work better for overclocking. it is the same price as the z97m pro4.

I really want to use the Thermaltake V21 case. I want small form factor.
