Future Proofing...hmm..I thought 4870 but..

The really funny part?

Here you don't want a 4850, as you don't think it's fast enough. It is about as fast as an overclocked 9800GTX. And yet you are considering a 9800 GTX.

Seriously, you'll be plenty happy with a 4850 for your resolution. There is absolutely no point in getting a 260 or 280, or a 4870 when you will be running at 1280x1024 resolution. Even an 8800GT can run crysis practically cranked at that resolution, and the 4850 is significantly faster than an 8800GT.

You are flogging a dead horse here. As I and others have pointed out, all of the OP's many posts go on in this same vein. Matters not how good the advice is, the OP starts out with a pre-conceived position and that's that. Watch in a week or two for a post about 'my 9800 GTX doesn't perform' from the OP.

Are you saying OverPower? by OP? I just want a good card and not worry about upgrading it anytime soon?

maybe I am not an ATi fan really, a 9800GTX Black Edition with my current ULTRA 600 watt psu is sufficient you are all saying or 4850?

OP means original poster, IE you.

As for sufficient? Either is sufficient, the 4850 probably would use a bit less power and be cheaper. Oh, and as for a bad experience, those cards you mentioned are ancient. On a similar vein, I once had a bad experience with an Nvidia FX5200...

As for upgrading soon? Come on. With that monitor, an 8800GT would last you for the next 3 years. A 4850 would last a LONG time, unless you upgrade your resolution (and even then, it should last quite a while, if you're content with somewhat less than cranked settings at, say, 1920x1200 for the next couple of years).

Then why ask? :heink:
Just keep your list to nVidia if you don't want people to give you balanced advice.

The GF9800GTX is a solid card, but regarding the title of this thread it doesn't really fit.

BTW, cut back on the new threads, combine them, gather your thoughts, then post a single thread instead of 3 - 30.
If you need time for that gathering, that can be arranged. :hello:

mf2385 here is my advice read this.....

Those games are awesome, omg!! get an XFX780i Mobo($175 w/amazon cc approval), grab a Xigmatek 1201 PSU($280), grab 2x2gb ocz reaper hpc DDR2 800($60), Vista 64($99), and Option 1:SLI 2x8800GT($275-$300) or Option 2: Get the XFX Black Edition card you were talkin about and single use it. Then enjoy the ride until Nvidia comes out with the new GDDR5 line and SLI 2 of those sometime in "09!!!!!

It seems to me that you really like Nvidia over AMD/ATI, so I would suggest buying those products so you don't get brain meltdown later when looking at the empty boxes..... sooo many empty boxes....

still same graphics card choices?

my budget is like 600 bucks..

IDK, what about getting the XFX 9800 GTX Black Edition, Windows Vista 64-bit home premium and 2 more gigs of PC6400 memory so my specs would then be

E6850 3.0 ghz duo core 2
4GB PC6400 DDR2 800mhz
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
XFX 9800GTX Black Edition OC
Ultra 600 Watt PSU

That would run good for awhile until my next big cpu/mobo upgrade idk?

or if anyone else has any better upgrades for my budget of 600 bucks please let me know

Do exactly that, but get a 4850. It's basically just as fast, but you'll save $50.

I kind of don't want the ATi card tho if I was to get one it would be the 4870, I don't want a lower version.. of the 4800 series.. I want something to last for a bit too, the 4850 will soon be overshadowed by the 4870x2 and new other cards.. idk.. it's not an easy choice

So? The 9800GTX is already overshadowed by the GTX 260 and 280, not to mention the 9800GX2, and is a lower version in the Nvidia lineup. The 4850 is just as fast as the 9800GTX OC, has just as much memory, does DX10.1, uses less power, and is cheaper. What more could you want?

(Actually, come to think of it, if you want something to last for a bit, the 4850 should be an easy choice over the 9800GTX, as it's newer and supports DX10.1)

What If I get for 599 it came out to

2 EVGA 8800GT cards to run in SLi
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3538922&sku=E145-8832

ULTRA X-Pro 750 Watt PSU SLi-Ready
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2441945&sku=ULT40029

ASUS P5N-D Nforce 750i SLi, 2 PCI express 2.0, motherboard
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3573170&sku=A455-2808

So my specs would be

E6850 Duo Core 2 3.0 Ghz
2Gb PC6400 DDR2 ram
2x8800GT 512mb GDDR3 SLi
ASUS P5N-D 750i SLi PCI Express 2.0 Motherboard
ULTRA X-PRO 750 Watt PSU with 4 PCI-E connectors
Windows XP pro

hmm

well to be completely honest in the past had 2 ATi cards that made me basically not want to buy any more same with AMD processors, I had a 8500 Radeon video card and 9800, both drove me to the crazy place... But yea, how's that latest config?

IDK maybe I should just get a GTX 260 FTW editon or something i don't know..

Yeah I agree, it seems pretty clear, if you want the best bang for your buck then the HD4850, if you want nVidia exclusively then the GF9800GTS is in your price range, but likely better to buy something like the GF8800GTS-512 and save some money, it may be a tiny bit slower than the GF9800GTX, but not that much, and both will be unplayable at the same level.

And once again when it comes to the title and gist of the thread the HD4850 is the clear choice if you can't afford an HD4870.
