FX 4100 v.s i3

I'm attempting to decide whether to buy an FX 4100 or an i3 for a budget gaming pc. My current system is running an older phenom I x4, and im planning to use my old hard-drive with windows vista already installed, in order to not have to buy another copy of windows. In this situation, which CPU should I get. FX on price and making it easier to do a switch, or i3 with better performance, but harder time switching.

Note: I'm mostly an AMD guy, so I don't know much about LGA1155 motherboards. Any recommendations on a sub70$ board would be appreciated

This is my mother board. Even with a bios update, it still only supports up to a phenom II x4 955 with ddr2 ram. I was reading some benchmarks, and the i3 does phenomenally well against the FX 4100. looks like it was even beat by the sandy-bridge based Pentium G860. Again, my only problem with intel is having to switch chipset drivers, because the switch from amd to amd, is alot easier than amd to intel if you are planning to use an existing install of windows on a new motherbord

Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

Athlon X2 BE-2xxx (Brisbane) (AM2)
Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ with Dual Core (Brisbane) technology (AM2)
Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ with Dual Core (Winsor) technology (AM2)
AMD Phenom Triple-Core (Toliman) up to 8xxx series (AM2+)
AMD Phenom Quad-Core (Agena) up to 9950, (AM2+)


since you have to get a new mobo for an upgrade, you should just get the i3

Where is microcenter based out of?

And say I were to get an i3, what motherboard would i get? I'm also buying a case and memory, and at the moment those take up about 100$ of my $250-300$ budget. Also what would using my current installation of windows, and changing chipset drivers and stuff entail by switching from AMD to intel.

on the website at the top middle there is a store locator. they have locations throughout the united states. i think the mobo is already chosen for you in the i3 package deal. (or you get 40$ off the mobo of your choice.. not sure).

when you get a new mobo, you have to do a clean install of windows.

i dont know anything about that, but the examples in the article are from older intel to newer intel or older amd to newer amd. its best if you ask around first. good luck!

I've decided to go with the i3, and this mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157241
Paired with Rosewill Challenger, and 8gb of rip-jaw X.
Last question, if i do a clean install, can i do it off the recovery partition with no disc? I think the version on the hard-drive is an OEM version of vista, so would i have to call and say "my motherboard burnt out, could i get a new activation code"

Dude this deal is expired... Current deal is i5 2500k + mobo for $250
