FYI about troubleshooting A64's

Hi everyone. I had an issue earlier regarding what I thought was a memory issue. However after several diagnostics, and formats, and lost hair, I have found out some info I would like to share. I was getting memory errors from WMD and my system was failing to load my OS about half the time. After asking around on here I also ran memtest86. Memtest turned out NO errors. Knowing that the memory controllers are onboard the A64 chips, I turned to AMD's tech support. They told me that if you are getting errors from windows memory diagnostic (WMD) but memtest86 runs clean, then you can be sure that it is your processor that is failing. Just a little heads up so anyone else having these issues doesnt have to walk around with bald patches like I had. p.s. Thanks to everyone that gave me advice on narrowing my issue down.

Yep, called AMD explained what was goin on, they gave me a # over the phone. Dont know if it makes much difference, but mine was a PIB.

If it was OEM you wouldn't be dealing with AMD. You'd be dealing with whoever you got it from. Which may be better, or may be worse. pot luck.

Actually, the dealing with my retailer was quite unsatisfactory as they almost automatically pawned me off to AMD. However it was a great relife how easy, and simple it was to RMA with AMD. And btw, your signature is quite possibly the best on THG forums

You all probably know this retailer, but I'll pass it along anyway. I've dealth with them for around 10 years now and they have never once dissapointed me.

With my last purchase, I returned in 30 days for exchange--nothing defective, jsut wanted gbetter stuff--an FX57 for an X2 4800, two sticks of ram, and a vid card. They paied the shipping to me. I had to pay the shipping for the returned item, but they actually paid for it to come to me, and it was just a swap, no defective parts. Also, no restock fee. That's pretty cool. I think they also have a price drop security policy too, but you'll have to read up on that.

Meh. I've used mwave on occasion, but usually only when Newegg doesn't have it. (Or worse, has it at a silly S&H cost.) But then usually if that's the case I go to <A HREF="http://www.pricewatch.com" target="_new">Pricewatch</A> and check up on the <A HREF="http://www.resellerratings.com" target="_new">reseller's quality and history</A>. You can get some good deals on single items that way, but it's annoying if you're building a system and all of your parts are coming from different places. :O
