Look, I'm not a n00b in this genre or anything. These games are my absolute favorite type of game. I've beaten D1, D2, Hellgate, Torchlight, Titan Quest, and have been in the Path of Exile beta for months.
This game is not as good as it should be. They took a lot of the elements that made its predecessor great and stripped them. Character customization is almost non-existent. Inevitably there are not going to be "builds" anymore and there will be obvious best combinations of skills to take at all times. Diablo 2 made you think about your character, plan them out, and then try again if you didn't do well. Path of Exile not only expounded on the customization but also adds a system for respec. So to say that I didn't play the original Diablos and didn't know what to expect is ridiculous. Blizzard dumbing it down is the problem. The achievements are a neat touch, but really is that 12 years of progress? The ideas they have in game have already been done by other companies (thank Flagship that all your loot is just yours), so what exactly are you getting other than the story? I could read books if I wanted that...
The graphics are just OK. It runs on everything: that's awesome. It looks like crap compared to Path of Exile and Torchlight 2: that sucks. Path of Exile will be free to play. Torchlight 2 is only 19.99 (and you'll probably be able to Steam sale it for much less). For 60 dollars and all that development time I expected something that looked better and was more polished. I also thought that post-beta there would be better graphics options (I was wrong).
Don't tell me lag isn't a problem either. It's ridiculous that I need a continuous connection to bnet in order to play. The fact that it messes with my performance is unacceptable. Hardcore mode is hard enough without having to be concerned about lag spikes (and yes, this was a concern in Diablo 2 but it's been 12 years and I play games all the time that do not have these lag issues).
I expected steps forward, not back. I feel bad for people that took a day off work to play and totally got screwed. You would think that Blizz had learned lessons from all their other launches (but they haven't). I really want it to be a great game. I want to play it more than I played Diablo 2 (which was a ton). It's sad that I'm actually looking forward to Path of Exile and Torchlight 2 and am questioning how much time I'll actually spend replaying this one....
