Not quite. My first Elite game was Elite 2 Plus. The cube thing looked a bit better, but not much.

The game that got me most addicted though was Elite 2 Frontier. God that game was awesome.

Hy...i am desperate and i don`t know where i can get answers ok so my problem is in freelander on mission 3 part 3 after i have escorted 2 cargos to a lunar station, me and juny are on the way to planet California Minor...and my ship encouters 3 valkyrie and nothing happens (i have looked on mision walkthrou and there said that they are supposed to atack me but nothing happens and if i atack them the game tells me that i have failed the mission)...please give me a response

Cube thing? I will have you know thats a coriolis station, and yes Ive docked with that many many times... Still drag that old game out and dust it off. Now the real question is how many people here have ever reached elite 😀 and how many times 😀 Yes I played that game when it was new out 😀 and that was on about my 5th computer system, which we still ahve and still works  AND still have the original saved game going from back in the 80's although one side of the disk no longer works 🙁

Elite 4 is allegedly back under development, but dont hold your breath on that one. Still from what tidbits have been released over time its going to be one hell of a game. I dont doubt it, what David Braben done in the past was nothing short of incredible given the limitations of the systems of the day first there was the original elite 3d graphics, AI, 1000's of completely unique systems with their own stock market in 22k...

Frontier elite 2 on a single floppy disk managed newtonian physics 3d models of an entire galaxy of planets, genuine solar systems in complete motion, orbits moons asteroids the works. All of which worked with a 7mhz processor and just 512kb of ram .

I actually still play fronter elite 2 through an emulator I play the amiga version (I dont count this as piracy as I still own myoriginal PC frontier elite 2 game disk) Theres oolite which is a modernised version of the original elite which works fine on macs or windows (even vista) and elite plus still works fine under dos box 😀.

I have my elite 2 frontier save still on my old Amiga 3000. I have the best ship with the second biggest gun (because there is absolutely no need for anything bigger) loaded up with shields and I was at the point where, for fun, I would occasionally fly into the Sol system, shoot at one of the three big stations around Earth until all three stations unloaded all of their police cruisers after me, blow them all to kingdom come, eject, pay my fine, dock, and buy a new ship leaving the old one in the hands of my loyal crew to do with as they please.

I think I can say with confidence that I beat the HELL out of that game.

Did you ever do the military all the way to top rank? on either side? did you find the thargoig space ship? did you become a top class assassin? The game had some very interesting missions on the military side, although it was a grind up doing all the courier ones to begin with - but even those can be a challenge working out a perfect load out to give you a long jump range , enoughto carry fuel for the full jump plus the haul into the station and with enough space to spare to load out some weapons shields and basic equipment for when you get attacked, and being proficient enough with that equipment to make it work against far bigger ships! My favourite courier ship was a viper 😀

Money making was easy a panther clipper and small plasma can come after 2-3 hours of playing if you know what you are doing (sol barnards star - lucury goods one way robots and computers the other and keeping an eye on the bbs for double price deals). Of course with 100 shield generators and a small plasma you can feel very incincible, But thats normally the starting point for me whenever I go back to frontier, Then I like to try kitting out small ships and running missions I like to pick up the "older" ships like the krait and the like and see what I can do with them, work out loadouts to maximize jump routes for courier work, spend time bounty hunting in a small fighter etc etc. I still go back to the old game.

I know I played around with the missions, not sure if I ever beat them. It has been over a decade and a half since I played the game.

I did find the Thargoid invasion ship after reading about it online, but never just stumbled upon it. I basically loaded up the game and went out in search of it specifically.

My favorite ship was the Imp Courier. It was fast and maneuverable and able to equip pretty much whatever you needed.

Yeah its not a bad ship at all, just didnt quite have the jump range I wanted for missions, but it did make a nice combat ship even one of the medium beam lasers in one of those took things down pretty well. From what I remember you needed good shields with them they were pretty big and took a battering at times. I still go back to most of the old elite games every couple of years. I just like sandbox style games and I like space games. The X-series is ok but just wasnt "big" enough or "free" enough. Although of course building your own complexs and fleets was very cool 😀

I never got into the X games. I found them to be unnecessarily complex and obfuscated. I wanted to like them, I really really did, but I couldn't even complete the early intro missions because they wanted me to do something that they could not be bothered to explain how to do.

I spent an hour trying to figure it out and then gave up the game in disgust.

Yeah the interface could be a real pig to work out, The last of the series was the best once they patched it up, But even that one takes some real figuring out. Combat in the second one was disastrous constant ramming... Although they had some nice looking pirate ships in that one 😀.

Elite 4 is supposed to be going again, I really think that will redefine space games as much as its previous versions have, but its gotta be a couple of years away yet.

Man that was a game.

I remember some friends of mine at a LAN party saw me playing it and they wanted in. We setup a server and 15 hours later...where still playing it. They figured out a route to maximize income by buying some commodity and selling it on a planet on the other end of the map. That planet had a commodity that could be sold at the first planet for a good profit.

One guy got a freighter and everyone else got fighters...they did this run over and over and over again.

Talk about a game that I would have never thought would be the 'popular' game at that LAN party.

as i said before, despite the global server being down, you CAN still paly Freelancer online with other people. I'm playing and having a lot of fun 😀

I didn't play freelancer but you can try Space Rangers 2....from what I've heard of freelancer and the hundreds of hours I spent playing it, you should like it :)

You know, the official servers might be down, but that doesn't mean the game is dead as far as multiplayer goes...

http://the-starport.net/

Check that site out, it's a huge resource for the game; especially look at the top navbar, has links to a LOT of Freelancer-related sites, both community sites and server sites.

There are also alternatives to the MS-hosted GLS:

FL's community is exceedingly stubborn and we won't let the game die off just because the publisher and developer have let us down!

All

Freelancer is alive and well and although a new version would be wonderful there are some great mods out there that have made it survive the years.

I would seriously recommend going to www.discoverygc.com and getting the freelancer Mod manager. Add the v4.84 mod pack and go play on the discovery 24/7 RP server. This server can host up to 200 players at once and regularily has over 150.

The forums are full of good advice on getting started and make sure you know what the RP rules are all about. If you follow them they really add to the game.

These guys are serious about role playing and have added dozens of new worlds and ships to explore. It's not all about PvP so you are not going to get annihilated at every turn. I spent weeks trading my way up to a seriously large trading ship and have made millions.

Now I own a fleet of Bounty Hunter ships and regularily go looking for bounties placed on the pirates that hang out in the darker corners.

There is nothing quite like finding a pirate, engaging in some role play and then engaging him as he tries to run away!!!!

Enjoy!

How do you do that?

have to say (although very old now) Privateer 2 is still one of the best do what you want space sims out there. I was gutted that freelancer couldnt live up to it. If you can stomach the ancient visuals well worth checking out.

Hi everyone, I am a big fan of freelancer I believe it is the best space sim .... the controles of the ship are great but I am also a big fan of adventure game. I wish we could also explore the cities and interact more with the other characters in the game instead of having all the time the same anim and voices. I watched firefly the series and heard they were doing a mmo.. I was so excited to the idea of a good space game with some good fight in a pub. But no news of it. Does anyone no any game where you can control your ship in the air but also control your character om land.... Maybe I am asking too much.
