Hello, a few weeks ago I built my brand new pc, but I have been having this issue of games just randomly closing, this is not BSOD, it just throws me to the desktop. Sometimes is happens after a few minutes sometimes it happens after 30 minutes, sometimes everything seem to work fine.

Total War Warhammer 3 just closes no error no nothing. Shadow of the Tomb Raider gives me this error View: https://imgur.com/tHbEniP

which points to drivers however:

  • This is a fresh Windows 11 install (even tried sfc scannow), everything is updated, I've updated the motherboard BIOS and installed all necessary drivers with Intel Driver & Support Assistant
  • Just to be sure I uninstalled GPU drivers with DDU in safe mode and installed the latest Nvidia GPU drivers
And my games still randomly close...

I installed HWInfo to keep an eye on temps while I game and nothing is overheating, CPU is at around 50°C, GPU at 99% load at around 70°C. I ran dozens of benchmark test with unigine heaven and superposition, I undervolted and/or underclocked and/or power limiting to stress test and it runs fine, no crashes, no BSOD.

And yet my games still randomly close...

It's like i'm alt+f4ing (except I'm not -_-)

The only other clue I have is this Shadow of the Tomb Raider log:
  • 23:42:59:171 (00009116) > [Crash] Memory statistics:
  • 23:42:59:171 (00009116) > [Crash] Total RAM = 31.8 GB (32609 MB)
  • 23:42:59:171 (00009116) > [Crash] Avail RAM = 23.5 GB (24106 MB)
  • 23:42:59:171 (00009116) > [Crash] Total virtual memory = 131072.0 GB (134217727 MB)
  • 23:42:59:171 (00009116) > [Crash] Avail virtual memory = 131005.6 GB (134149740 MB)
  • 23:42:59:171 (00009116) > [Crash] Unhandled exception at address 0x00000000df4c0324 (code: 0xc0000005): "Access violation"
...which maybe? points to RAM, but again I tested it with Windows Memory Diagnostic and it said there is no problem. Should I try with memtest86, does it even work on Windows 11 (64x)? I even manually increased my virtual memory to 32GB in a hail mary google.

I'm using two DDR5 sticks in the A2 and B2 slots with XMP 3.0 enabled and they're supported by my motherboard View: https://imgur.com/0ZFymLS

my system isn't showing any other signs of corrupted RAM.

It can't be a power issue, I have a 1000W PSU CORSAIR RM1000X (2021) which is supposed to be reliable according to psucultists https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/ I'm using 3 separate 8pin cables to power my card so it's not starved when under load.

I am honestly at a loss here, what am I missing... please help I'm so confused

Anyway here are the specs are:

  • Windows 11 (all updated)
  • Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z690 AORUS PRO (updated BIOS, latest clean install drivers)
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-12600KF (no way its the cpu right?)
  • RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 (tested with Windows Memory Diagnostic)
  • GPU: ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3080 12GB GAMING OC (schrodinger card faulty and not faulty at the same time?)
  • PSU: CORSAIR RM1000X 80+Gold 1000W (maybe it's the psu but I don't have a spare to swap and test)

I only have one dump file https://files.catbox.moe/6byuts.zip which is the one and only instance of a restart I had when I was benchmarking in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

UPDATE 1: Tested CPU Intel Core i5-12600KF (air cooled) with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility + Cinebench

Ran multicore test 10 minutes, no problems max temp on CPU was 53°C at 100% usage.

UPDATE 2: Tested GPU ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3080 12GB GAMING OC with Unigine Heaven

Ran test at ultra quality, extreme tessellation, 8x anti-aliasing at 2560x1440p for 30 minutes. No problems with max temp 74,9°C, average temp 73°C at 100% usage.

Next up Memtest86.

UPDATE 3: Tested RAM G.Skill Trident Z5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 with Memtest86 at stock speed 4800mhz and it passed with 0 errors took about 4 hours.

I'm thinking it might be XMP that is causing my issues, will run Memtest86 again tonight with XMP 6000mhz @ 1.3V

UPDATE 5: So I ran Memtest86 with XMP enabled and it showed 0 errors. Now I did get a crash when I ran the in-game benchmark for Shadow of the Tomb Raider and got a memory.dmp file and this is what it says:

Are my RAM sticks faulty somehow even with Memtest86 showing 0 errors?

UPDATE6: So after digging on the internet it seem that this is a common issue with Gigabyte z690 motherboards and DDR5 XMP.

View: https://www.reddit.com/r/gigabyte/comments/s8apva/any_solutions_regarding_z690_mobos_and_the_ddr5/

https://www.gskill.us/forum/forum/p...0u3636e16gx2-tz5rk-not-stable-with-xmp-non-oc

That means there are two solutions:

1 - Run DDR5 RAM at stock/non-XMP settings and wait for Gigabyte to release BIOS updates

2 - Replace the Gigabyte Z690 motherboard with a non-Gigybate Z690 motherboard. MSI Z690 motherboards seem to be the one with no DDR5 XMP issues.
