Hello,

I have a 5y/o desktop I use for gaming and to watch movies with the following configuration:

Samsung Syncmaster S24B350H LCD Monitor 24" 1920x1080
Case Ahtec 1200 V3
ATX850W LC8850II V2.3 – Arkangel Metatron series
PCB-SABERTOOTHZ77
INT-3570K Core i5 3570K 3,4Ghz / 3,8Ghz - 4 Núcleos - 6MB Caché (never been OC)
VEN-FREEZER7PRO Arctic Cooling Quiet Computing
MEM-DDR3.4GB.HYPERX DDR3 4GB 1600 Mhz HYPERX (2 modules)
EVGA Geforce GTX770 2GB DDR5
SSD-120GB S3 500MBS SSD 500 MB/s SERIES SATA III 120GB 2.5IN MLC
2X 1TBSATA3 7200rpm
Windows 7 Home Premium

I have been very intrigued for a while by 21:9 34" curved screens so I picked up on sale this week a BenQ XR3501. The monitor itself seems to work fine (apart from a couple dead pixels) and the 1080 is ok for games.

Now to the problem, (I hope I am able to explain properly); the performance I am seeing is worse than I was expecting for the display: I am having some stuttering problems in games and movies and with the UFO test at 144hz/144 FPS or even at lower refresh rates is giving me a bit of a trail (https://www.testufo.com/).

What is worse, in movies, even with slow moving objects or when the camera rotates (say a space ship in Star Wars) you can detect small jumps in the image, and it is not fluid; also the image quality ain´t that impressive. In games, for example Deus Ex HR, the image is neater than my 24" 60hz but it is choppy and blurry when looking around fast (something I had not noticed in my old Samsung)

Based on previous research the XR3501 should be fine for what I use it, and I don`t think the 1080 is a problem for gaming/movies, also the 144hz should help with the lack of G/F sync (please correct me if I am wrong in any of the statements...); so my conclusion was "you need to change that 770 for at least a 1060, preferably a 1070".

I was checking the Acer X34, as a better alternative to the BenQ, but as much as I would love that one (1440p, G-sync, etc) here the Acer is more than 1200 € compared to less than 500€ I paid for the BenQ; the difference is too much just to play a few hours a week and watch some movies (also I have the feeling that if I had gotten the Acer I would have had similar problems)

So I would love if you can give me some advice to see if dropping another 400€ to get a 1070 will fix the problems (or if a 1060 for 300€ is worth it) and also if there is other components creating a bottleneck (CPU? would OC to 3,8 help? should I add more RAM?), or if you think there is something wrong with the monitor and I should just return it and stick to my old Samsung...

Also if there is any recommendations in the settings of the monitor for my current build that you can give me (recommended refresh rate, AMA, etc), and the proper settings for a build with a 1070 (if they are different)

Thanks a lot in advance.

2560 x 1080 144hz monitor

your gpu is PATHETICALLY underpowered for the task

gtx 1070, preferably gtx 1080

with a overclocked i7 3770K

if you are not ready for the upgrading necessary, return that monitor and get a standard 1080p 60hz monitor

Thanks both for the replies,

I am getting an EVGA 1080 SC ACX 3.0 (08G-P4-6183-KR); the price of the 1070 has gone up so much lately that the gap with the 1080 is just around 70€.

The upgrade of the chip will have to wait because I think once OC to 4-4,5 it should not be much of a bottleneck for the 1080, definitely not worth the 500€ and up I have been seeing for the 3770k. I rather wait for the processor and up the Z77 later on. I assume the two 4gb modules will not be a problem in any case.

I hope with the upgrade in the GPU I will see what I was expecting from the BenQ....

Thanks again,

Thanks. Yes I saw that for certain CPU intensive games it will hold a bit the 1080.

If I find a good price for a second hand 3770k I will try, otherwise for the money of a new one I think it will be better to wait and upgrade in the future from the 1155, (which means changing the sabertooth too; a shame because it's a great motherboard}
