I totally forgot earlier, any drive connected will be considered a removeable drive.

Upgrade the Intel Matrix Storage Manager to the newest version as this fixes a lot of problems with the older versions and will detect the drives correctly as to whether they are internal, external or removable.

As I have told theteddy and others, it is very important that you get the drivers directly from the makers of the drivers instead of from Gateway. Also it is important not to install any of the crap which Gateway installs on the system.

The flickering you mention is the cursor issue that theteddy mentioned and that many other people have encountered with this system. I think that part of that was the older ATI Catalyst driver from the Gateway website. You want to use the newest driver directly from ATI. Also, the Creative Suite can cause problems.

i do have the newest Intel Rapid Storage driver and the newest ATI driver and my cursor does not flicker it's just my screen. as for the Creative Suite are you talking about Adobes Creative Suite or the audio Creative Suite?
 
The Creative X-Fi MB Audi suite is what I meant.

As for your screen, check to make sure all your connectors are tight. That none of them are loose and that your system is clean of any dust and well ventilated.

Make sure your video card is fully seated too and the DVI connector is tight both on the card and on the monitor.

ok so... my connectors are tight, PC is clean and running cool and the card is seated right and yet the screen flickers after it boots up and when i click on the safe remove >< maybe i will reinstall the ati driver in the morning. if you think of anything let me know. but will not be back till morning/afternoon lol also just want to say thanks for the help so far not alot of people would be so helping. keep up the great work

Hey just an update and sorry for double posting.

So I uninstalled the ATI driver and went to the safe remove hardware icon in the sys tray opened it and there was no more flicker, I restarted and reinstalled the ATI driver, rebooted and now the flicker is back. It looks like it has to do with the driver/card or maybe the pci slot, is there any bios setting that would affect the card? I’m running out of ideas to try any help would be great ><

How much memory do you have in your system, the base 3GB or did you upgrade the memory?

I'm thinking it's possibly something of Gateway's running in the background which would mean that you need a clean install of your system so that none of the Gateway crap will be loading in the background.

The best thing would be to put the WD drive in the first position, then booting from the install disk, install windows to the WD Disk and make sure you don't install any of the crap from Gateway. This would also prevent anything from gateway from loading in the background haing to do with the EISA partition.

But if you do install to the WD Drive, you need to set the WD as the Boot drive before you start the install after you switch the drive around.
 
I'm running 9 GB of ram. i can’t see it being something in the background i have had this pc for 5 or 6 mouths with no issues. As for a reinstall I have done a clean reinstall, formatted the driver and use the restore CD, I also removed all the gateway stuff I think. Doing a new reinstall is that last thing i would want to do right now. >< but if I have to is there a way to just install windows without the gateway stuff coming with?

i would think that it has to do with the ati driver seeing how the flicker stopped after i uninstalled them right?
 
If it's the ATI driver, are you using the newest driver direct from ATI or from Gateway?

As to your other drivers and stuff, is anything installed that is from Gateway other than the BIOS?
 
yes newest driver from ati 10.3

as for other drivers got the 3 you posted ati,intel rapid, realtek, bios from gateway. that's all that comes to mind. did i miss any big driver updates?
 
What about software and stuff, any of it pre-installed by Gateway?

The Pre-installed stuff you need to be careful about too.

Also it's very important that anything that is installed on the system whether it be Adobe stuff or anything else as keeping things up to date closes security exploits.

Downloads you need to be very careful of too as they can contain hidden payloads which can seriously infect your system when you access the downloaded files.

FileHippo.com is a good site for keeping an eye out for updates, but for some programs you need to go straight to the author's site to get the 64-bit updates as filehippo usually only lists the 32-bit updates.
 
yes i'm also wondering how to do clean install with the restore cd? my machine is still sluggish. i have a latop studio xps that came with an OS winvista64 disk.
i'm trying to install on the gateway right now and just use the key on the side machine. still running don't know if it will work. let's see what happens.


 
The way I did it was to purchase a Windows Upgrade when I purchased my system.

First I tried the system as is, didn't like the way it ran, then I installed the new drive, booted from the install disk and installed to the new drive without using any of the Gateway stuff.

I installed to the new drive so as there would be no problems associated with the EISA drive and with the Gateway stuff running in the background such as the recovery crap.

The restore CD basically restores the system back the the factory configuration including the manufacturer crap. The only real use the restore disk may be is IF[/i] an upgrade disk will accept the restore disk as a valid source for verification.

I have since done a full installation of Windows 7 Ultimate which I have found to be far more stable and better.
 
well I'm at a loss with the flicker. i think I'm just going to have to live with it for now >< on a side note the cursor flicker issue right now i just have the ATI High Definition Audio disabled and that stops it just want to know if there was a new fix for that or is that still the way to do it? and one more thing lol the bios setting you posted for someone at the top was that just for him or is that what all of us should have?

edit just saw your last post, yes if i had a copy of vista or if i had 220$ for windows 7 ultimate i would use my 1tb drive and reinstall >< and all my issue would be no more lol
 
The BioS setting to disable the Gateway logo should be for everyone, but in general, the settings list should help most everyone. :)

I try to do what I can to help with the FX6800 system, but I do my best work hands on as I find it's easiest when I don't have to try to explain anything. It's more like you have to have a natural feel for this sort of thing.

I'm not even sure if I'm explaining myself very good right about now. 🙁
 
i'm done installing vista with the studio xps vista disk. it didn't even ask for the key. now when i look at the system properties i has 30 days to activate the product and the manufacturer is dell and not gateway. i then tried to activate windows using the gateway key. but it cannot connect ot the internet. and now the remaining days change from 30 to 3. when i look at the device manager i think the ethernet has no driver or not detected.
this are the list of devices with triangle warnings in device manager:

under Other devices
Ethernet controller
PCI simple comunications controller
SM Bus controller
and (7 )System interrupt controller
the max resolution i get at first boot was 1600x1200 on the displays settings eventhough my montitor is 1920x1200. luckily there is an ati folder when i double click drive C os. there i i find the setup and it is the latest driver. now i got the full resolution.

the remaining problem is how will get drivers for this warnings since i cannot connect to the internet?
will this work, i will download drivers in my laptop and just put it on a sd card. then load it on the gateway.
and the most important is can this be activated with the gateways key i can already connect to the internet. hope i can since it is running so much faster.

if you have any ideas please reply.

The system interupt controllers should be taken care of by the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.

Seeing as things changed from Gateway to Dell and went from 30 to 3 days, when you tried the activation, the best thing you can try is the offline activation. It'll require you to phone Microsoft. This way you can explain what happened with trying to do a clean update on a new drive and it changing from Gateway to Dell, 30 days to 3 days.

Provide them with the information they ask for such as the original Key /serial from the sticker on the side of the COA on the side of the system should they ask for it.

this is one of the reasons I had originally said you might be best having someone locally who is good with computers help you with this as they might have stood a better intuitive chance at getting through this nightmare scenario.

This is one of the situations in which I wish you lived close enough nearby where I could actually help you by working directly on your system with out the need for you to do anything. 🙁

Hi Renegade i think i just activated my windows. when the 30 day changed to 3 that was when i wasn't able to connect to the internet.
so i downloaded the Lan_Intel_9.52.9.0_Vistax64 from the gateway website and it installs smoothly so now i can connect to the internet. i'm about to call microsoft but i just wanted to check if i can activate it without calling. (you know my english is not very good specially if speak. im a little better in writing.
After i type the gateway key i was prompted to wait because it may take a few minutes.
i prayed it's not the police that i'm waiting. LOL.
LOrd and behold it activated succesfully. Yeheey!Thank GOD.

But if it didn't i will still call microsoft or restore again with the gateway restore cd crap.

I think i need to upgrade that lan from intel. also the chipset i downloaded took care of the controller warnings. no more warning now and it is running very zippy without all the craps that gateway loads.

So is there anything more driver i will update aside from the intel rapid storage and the Lan-intel? What about the Chipset?

by the way the manufacturer still shows dell.
Right now it is still updating winodws, 80+ updates to be exact. Waiting...........sigh!

Just make sure you install ALL windows updates which may be available.

Same thing applies to any software and plugins that is installed on the system.

For the last few weeks, I've been running Microsoft Security Essentials as my Anti-Virus program and it seems to work just fine. The only change I made in the setting was under Advanced, I selected Scan Removable Drives. That's for such as flash drives and other such.

I also have installed MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and SpyBot Search & Destroy (without the Tea Timer). I keep both programs updated weekly and run scans periodically.

I also use OpenDNS with these settings as an added layer of protection.
 
So I may just get a copy of windows 7 and try that on the 1tb. But I’m not 100% on what driver I will need to find. The ones I know are ...
ATI
Intel(R) Rapid Storage
RealTek
Sun java
The ones i don’t know where to get would be the motherboard/chipset (from Intel I’m guessing) , cd-dvd drive and that all I can think of >< I know it’s allot to ask but any way you can do a list of driver to get for upgrading to windows 7 : D help all us simple pc users out lol ><

The Intel(R) Rapid Storage is the X58 chipset driver which works for both Vista and Windows 7.

The Optical drive (CD/DVD drive) don't worry about as Windows takes care of that. No need to install any drivers. Although if you want to use the disk labeling I would suggest removing the drive and replacing it with an LG Lightscribe GH22LS50 as the lightscribe disks are easier to find than the ones your current drive uses.

It's hard to build a list of drivers cause Windows basically takes care of most of them.

The ones you need to take care of yourself I have pretty much already listed.

Others are just programs and software which need to be kept updated regularly and you need to use a bit of common sense and to always be a touch paranoid when using your system if you want to keep it working and clean.

wow ok so all i need to get b4 i do a windows 7 install are the 5 drivers you have already linked to and windows 7 will do whats left? and for the cursor flicker issue is what i posted the right fix.

I do try to help when I can, but when it comes to the various systems out there, I try to stick to systems that I own so as that I can verify settings and such.

Same thing applies to operating systems. I am fairly fluent in Windows 7 and Vista.

XP I am starting to get a bit rusty in, but I can still help some what.

95 and 98 I find difficult at best as it's been a little too long since I last ran those OS's but if I had to work on them again, I could work my way through them first hand, but I don't think I could talk someone else through it without first running through it myself kinda like a refresher course.

With DOS, I'd have to just dig up the old handbook and relearn all the old command which I used to use almost like second nature. As it is, with DOS I can still use a handful of the commands, just not as many as I used to use. :)

Now Linux, now that's another story altogether as it's been a while since I last ran Linux and I have done both the command line and Xwindows.

For a Browser, I recommend using the latest FireFox with the Adblock Plus add-on
 
So now my plan is to try and get windows 7 at the end of next week and try it out. I will be using the 1tb drive I have. I just have some question about that, the 1tb drive has allot of free space will I need to format it or will the win 7 install just partition part of it for windows 7? also for the other drive that has vista on it is there a way to just take out vista and keep the data on it or will I need to back up and format it? And if you have any other tip from your install of windows 7 would help allot.

 
Seeing as your Vista drive has the EISA partition on it, you definitely don't want to install Windows 7 to that drive. You can leave Vista as is and you can even Dual Boot, Windows 7 will set a Boot Menu automatically and give you a choice during boot up.

Now when you install Windows 7, Switch the 1 TB drive to the SATA-0 position on the controller, then in the BIOS set it as the Boot drive.

Next, after you have saved and exited the BIOS and the system reboots, make sure the Windows 7 DVD is in the DVD drive and Hit F10 during the Boot screen when it tells you to hit either F2 or F10.

F10 will bring up the Boot device menu allowing you to boot from the DVD drive so you can start the installation right away. Make sure that you pay attention to the installation and you select Custom installation. This way you can select the drive you want to install to.

You don't need to format the drive or anything. If you have files and stuff on the drive already you might just want to organize it first before doing this. Create a fold and dump what ever folder/files there are in this folder before you start. :)

If you do the Windows upgrade, windows will detect the other installation and you'll be all set. You'll still be able to use it too. Once you finish, just be sure to configure everything, install what ever needs installing and make sure everything including windows is fully updated.

You'll be able to boot either Vista or Windows 7 with no problem.

BTW...

With Adobe Reader, you'll want to go into the settings and disable JavaScript as there is no need for this and having this setting enabled is a very dangerous exploit which Adobe leaves enabled by default. It'd be a very simple thing for them to fix to by setting the default setting to disabled.
 
ok so I move the 1tb WD to port 0 and the vista drive to one of the other port, then I reboot tell it to use the WD drive, have the windows 7 cd in the dvd drive, use Custom installation install to the WD drive. Install driver and update.

Now when I’m in windows 7 can I still see the files on the vista drive? And will the programs I have installed on the vista drive still work or will I need to reinstall them to the 1tb WD drive? As for the duel boot the windows 7 install will just see the other drive with vista and then give me the option to boot vista or windows 7?

This maybe my last post for the night so if i don’t reply back its b/c i’m sleeping lol
