I'm hoping on upgrading my current graphic card (GTX 1050 ti) to a RTX 2080. However, the GTX 1050 ti is a GDDR5 whereas the RTX 2080 is a GDDR6; is this a problem?

No, the memory is on the graphics card. The main two things that should concern you are whether your PSU can handle the new graphics card and whether the other parts (mainly the CPU) are powerful enough to give you the full potential of RTX 2080.
