I'm not a good arguer/debater, I tend to get frustrated easily and then I can't think 😀 Girl thing...

But! I do agree with Mister Comptia in some regards.

The statement that GeekSqaud dudes can improve on software is a little ridiculous. The only thing they could really do is comment on some functionalities that they would like. But, for the most part, they won't. It's a in between job to get some experience and money before they move on.

Anyway, I hope my local geeksquad doesnt know how to access webpages, they might find my bashing.

I went over there yesterday to pick up a hard drive. It was a WD400gb Sata2 drive on sale, and I asked them to look up this model to find out if used PR or not. They went right to WD.com and said they have no idea what perpendicular recording was and could not figure out how to look it up online. I promptly explained to the geeksquad manager what that was and why it makes a differnce and he said.. .oh. and shrugged.

That is not the attidude of a geek.
Step 1 in becomming a geek.... know what Google.com is.
Step 2... care about technology.
Step 3... find a respectable job or show off while working at GeekSquad, because you wont be gaining tech experience, you will be gaining knowledge in corporate policy... which IS usefull.

I dont know what PR is... and frankly I got better things to learn. I have came to the conclusion that no matter how much I learn, there will always be more to learn... so I try and focus on what interests me.

What I care about is the drives performance... I dont care if it comes with a midget that spins a wheal to make the thing spin.

I am also not a IT guy. I do IT for fun, though I would NEVER want to do it as a job. I like IS (programming systems/databases/etc)!

Their are probably geeksquad employees who love doing IT, and then do programming for fun.

Im amazed by the people who work on opensource code. You have 15 year old kids, too the weirdest professions on earth. Most people who code for a day job, do so much coding that they just cant do it after work.

I am tired of trying to show you the errors in your ways, and maybe give you some insight on how to improve yourself.

I was talking about my interest in IT and helping people fix their computers (AKA TomsHardware Forums) as a HOBBIE! It is NOT something I do for a living. When someone asks me if I want to build them a machine at work, I tell them to go buy a Dell. That way I don’t have to fix it, and you don’t have to pay me $50/hour to do so.

If my computer at work breaks, I don’t fix it... I call the IT guys... I can get into shit if I try to fix it, and then some IT guy blames me for messing something up...

I hate building and fixing large numbers of computers. I hate running cable, fixing networks, running Linux and Windows Servers... I hate IT... well at least as a job... I would rather landscape then take a IT job.

I do like helping people on these forums though I am sure people feel the opposite about IT as I do... and that they prefer to fix computers all day then sit behind a screen and program. I know allot of IT guys who like to program, but that they do it as a hobby.

Its not tough to write code... any moron can do it; even you <INTENTIONAL FLAME>... I know quite a few that do, so maybe you too should start a open source project

out techs will use software if it's free AND does the job right. You'd do the
same. You have to look at it from a different perspective. Your mate &
girlfriend didn't have a fookin clue. So they call out somone who does.

work Ultimate Boot CD yourself. And anyways... why didn't you fix it?!

FYI:

Just about everyone has a computer. I'd say 80% are clueless. And I'm
talking about families, or people who just want to switch on the computer
and get some media or just play a game or just watch a film. They are
apprehensive about tinkering with something as complicated as a pc
(because they have no knowledge, etc, etc). So there's a lot of money
to be made from this. Shop around for a better price or start to learn how
a computer works!

Haven't read through the entire thread but got the jist of it. I am a geek squad technician so some of what I say may been a little bias but I'm going to say it anyways.
Best Buy does overcharge in some cases for in store services but the majority of them are reasonable. The price for in Store service I will admit are way overpriced.
That one CD that you found is nowhere near everything that we do when working on machines, it is just one tool among many that we have. The majority of the programs we use are owned buy Best Buy and not available to the public.
I admit that some of the people that are hired for the job are under qualified but are hired because generally we're understaffed.
Some of the prices that I saw people saying we charge are 100% inaccurate. I believe I saw someone saying an OS re-install for over $200, this is soo off the actual price I'm astounded. The in store cost is $99 and thats after prices were just increased recently.
I agree with what was previously stated in some other posts, over 80% of the general public are either too scared, don't know how or are too lazy to fix their own computers. Geek Squad allows the average Joe to keep their computer running without them having to spend hours fixing it themselves.
If anyone has any other things to say about Geek Squad I will be more than happy to either agree or disagree with valid reasons, I look forward to you attacks 😛

Yea i work for Geek Squad and i agree with you it is a little crazy once you see the CD but a BIG BUT you guys kno nothing about the cd it has paid software on there thats doesn't need keys and it does everything from viruses to diag to fixing windows, telling you had BSOD mean. Dont knock the cd once you us it it is awesome. But yea they charge way way to much. I actually am about to get fired bec i open an office and started my own business fixing computers for a screen repair $99 + parts so $249.99 they fix it by sending it to a service center for 4 weeks and charge $500 dollars is BS they rip people off all the time and rely to much on the software and cant do a real diagnostic. LOL and there are some stupid people that work there my CO worker told a customer to file down a nock on the ram so it would fit into the slot

I dont care wtf else they are good at in their job, they could know every programming language known to man, but it does NOT make them a beter computer diagnostician. I know 3 sets of GeekSquad agents because I buy all my stuff there... and I talk to all of them ... about 30 employees in all. They are low paid, entry level computer people who have their A+. They are not gods...

actually your wrong again i work there and i know a few people on staff are programmers and just need the job for what it is a $12-$13 an hour job. Nothing more also i work with a few people that are MCSE, A+, network+,Server+ and have many more certs and stay there for extra cash. There other job is military. But there are a few slow people that work their also

I know this is a little bit off of the topic for everyone but I guess it does tie in to Best Buy and the whole prices thing. I went to best buy the other day and I went straight to the geek squad desk to ask if they knew where I could get some good ddr2 ram fo my gaming rig. They pointed me to a shelf with a bunch of value ram and theen he pointed to a single 2gb stick of corsair ddr2 800mhz gaming memory. One stick cost $100.00!! I mean that was like completely absurd!! WTF?? I can get 4gb of ddr2 1066 of a better brand with better timings for the same price. Not only that all of the ram there was waaaayyy overpriced to the point of lunacy! I hope I am not the only 1 who sees this.
