Any chance Tom can do a review of card rivers against say, the 5870 and gtc 480 (and I guess SLI / CrossFire performance)?

I would like to see which company increases performance by x% over say, six months?

We could use this to understand just how crippled drivers are at a cards release time, and help understand the long term investment into these products!

I would like more affordable cards, rather than this monsters which i can not pay for. Innovation it's good, it's great but actually being able to buy a product it's much better.

[citation][nom]TheRockMonsi[/nom]The price right now for this card is way over $500 on newegg. For that price NVIDIA better be giving me a bj as well.[/citation]
sorry to burst your bubble, no bj included

[citation][nom]Cleeve[/nom]I think that's a bit of a stretch when you consider the relatively tiny deployment of CrossFire. On a single-card basis, the 5870 is much better than the 6850. Hell, even the 5850 performs closely.[/citation]
Clearly the 5870 is faster then a 6850 even a 6870 but not by much in regards to the 6870. Now when you have 2 in crossfire then even the 6850 is able to stay with the 5870x2 in some games yes, while the 6870 is too much for the 5870 in regards to crossfire.
" relatively tiny deployment of Crossfire "

What ?? You must be joking,
really ? Thats not what I'm seeying , , Take a look at some reviews then get back to me....

I'm not joking but I think you misunderstand.

"relatively tiny deployment in CrossFire" means that there are very few people using a CrossFire setup--it's a small percentage of users, well under 10%... under 5% the last time I checked.

The vast majority of users are using these cards in a single setup. in this case, the 5870 does have a sizable advantage over the 6870 in many game titles, especially in shader-heavy games.

I agree so I was right when I guessed less than 10% had crossfire or sli set ups? more have sli it is pretty good compared to the newer Xfire.

they already have more affordable cards, the 5770, 6850 gts450 and gtx460.

We continue to be impressed with the performance AMD’s Cypress GPU delivers compared to the power it draws.

That's the reason why AMD can do a 5970. Come on Nvidia, aren't you still going to challenge AMD's dual gpu flagship, even now when Cayman and Antilles is approaching?

Again great review. Another bit of information I would like to see is an OC'ed 480GTX. The 6870/6850 review had an OC'ed 460 by Nvidia's request so it would only be fair to add a 480GTX OC'ed in this one. The 480GTX can match the 580's stock clock so let us see if the 580 is truly a new design or just has better cooling. Here is a OCing review of aftermarket cooling which gets 880MHz on a 480GTX. This is a fair compare as the 480GTX plus the aftermarket cooler price is about the same as a 580GTX on newegg.

You're going to regret saying that when it turns out to be Jen Hsun Huang that shows up :)

For me as a UK mainstream consumer i'm hoping and praying that the top end cards from AMD and Nvidia drive Mainstream card prices down. At the moment they are really low since the overclocked GTX460 1gig version costs as much as the 768MB Palit version i bought 3 weeks ago! Bearing in mind that the Palit card was the cheapest GTX460 at the time.

Also with VAT increasing from 17.5% to 20% (UK) by the end of December, I am hoping that AMD's "succession" cards can be reflected in price (a 6850 for £120~$195 would be a dream!).

For once, the mainstream can rejoice with such fierce and dare i say "dangerous" competition in the discrete graphics market section.

wow, what an awesome review. felt like i almost owned the gtx580 a short time. well planned, the included 5870s 1gb AND 2gb performances too. totally right about waiting to see how the upcoming cayman gpus compare. +1 awesomeness to date.

There seem to be lots of folks using GF100/104 based cards are having low GPU usage problem that leads to low fps (lower than supposedly slower GT200 and G92 based cards), or "micro stutter" WHILE still have high fps reading. In the latter case, because it can hide behind high fps result, normal benchmark means won't expose such problem, you have to actually play the game to know. Is Tom's aware of this problem?

In regard to micro stutter, AMD cards can also exhibit such problem, especially in CFX setup or dual GPU cards, though less common, mostly in specific game such as BF:BC2. The low usage problem on the other hand is particularly NVIDIA's, namely GF100/104 based cards. I am curious if GTX 580 is still having these problems.

You'll probably lose your "good deal" money from the amount of extra power that 480 sucks in about a year.

I have a GTX 470 1.2GB, OC'd to 845/1690/1830 @ 1.062v, i7 930 OC'd to 4.26Ghz.. just ran same test on 3dMark Vantage and scored within 10 FPS of the 580... Every single test was EXTREMELY close... I imagine real-world scenario (gaming, gfx design) may be a different story thou...

What I don't understand is that lately, all websites including Tom's Hardware are using the new Intel 6 core processor in their test and they all seem to be using RAM frequencies over the 1333 mhz levels whereas the i7 980x will automatically downclock the frequencies to 1066 and the user has to overclock to 1333. And thats the max the processor will allow and the processor will not allow anything over the 1333 mhz barrier? And I see companies using 2000 mhz ram. Why? They all should the ram matched in frequency speed the processor will allow. Tom's Hardware, I want a response to this comment.

Hmm.. interesting argument, cigarjohn. Im wondering why they choose to use the 980X processor, that features a hefty pricetag of nearly $1000.00. The vast majority of people do not have or use this processor, so why perform benchmarks featuring it? Why not use a more main-stream, commonly used processor, and ALL components for that matter. Dual or Quad core perhaps.

Guru3d uses i7 965.. But the longer they can use the same setup, the easyer it is to have a full chart of cards. So it really makes sence to use the 980X :)

That plus they are trying to get as far away from CPU and/or system bottlenecks as they can.

In any case I wonder what the 570 will bring? The wife would kill me for spending $500 on this, but I want too...

This is the answer to why we'd use a -980X!

Thanks for that Jag!

Anandtech has an ok review but I want to see if the 580GTX can match the 480GTX in OCing. I read on benchmark review site that the 580GTX has a low 840MHz overclock. The 480GTX has no problem with 850MHz on stock cooling and 880MHz with aftermarket coolers. Can the current 480GTX owners match performance of the 580GTX with a $60 aftermarket cooler? Are there any 580GTX aftermarket cooler or can a 580GTX at 840MHz bet a 480GTX at 880MHz? I know the max OC could be a bit higher or lower but I would like to see testing.
