I know this is not really XP specific, but surely someone here knows a work
around.

I have the original disk and I did install from it, but when I run the
update downloaded from the Creative site I still get the message that I
should install from the original disk first. I uninstalled and tried again
but still get the same thing. How do I get around this?

You are very correct; however, they are practically dead newsgroups and I
have already tried there.

Uninstall any Creative software from Add/Remove Programs in the Control
Panel. Reboot, then install the drivers/software from the CD ROM. Now
download and install the updates through the Automatic Update available
here:
http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/su.asp

Or go here and download them individually:
http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/

You have to restart between installing the drivers and installing any
updates. Reboot after each update if possible to ensure that they are
correctly updated :)
