I recently bought this game http://www.amazon.com/F-E-R-Gold-Pc/dp/B000NIG5Y4/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1234388360&sr=8-1 I recieved it and installed it on my computer and when I went to play it noticed an extreme lag in the game. I have vista 64 bit and a computer more than capable of playing this game. Even with all the settings on Minimum the game is getting like 5-10 fps it is deffinately not even playable. I have all the latest drivers for my video card and everything other game works just fine. Is it a direct X issue maybe? I installed the latest versions and got direct x 9 restarted my computer and I cant get the thing to work..

There is some setting that has to either be on or off to resolve this. It's something like you have to force VSync on or off but I can't remember. Once you do whatever it is I can't think of the game will run just fine. Try searching this forum or others because it's a fairly well known and easily fixable issue but I just can't recall off the top of my head what it is.

Turn off Soft-Shadows, which is the setting PurpleRat is trying to remember.

Other than that run the test loop in game, give us the results and a full breakdown of your rig, including resolution.

Ive tried everything. I first tried turning off soft shadows and it didnt make a difference. Then i tried cleaning out my registry with cc cleaner thinking maybe the problem was there- nothing. After that, I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it - nothing. I had a friend come over who owned an older version of the game and installed and used his play disc with my product key and at first it worked just fine. I got a an average of 60 f/p/s ( the most you can get on F.E.A.R) and it worked great, then I did it again and i got an average of 4 f/p/s and I tried it a third time and got the same...

Yup, that's the issue I was talking about, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with VSync, especially now that you are saying 60 fps is the most you can get with FEAR. Try disabling VSync both in the game and forcing it off in your GPU settings. But I still think your best bet is to do some more research on this issue as I'm almost positive it's more fully addressed elsewhere.

Yep in the nvidia preferences force v-sync off. And there may even be some patches around for vista v-sync.

Core 2 Quad Q9550 ( 2.83GHZ ) 8GB of Mushkin Ram Nvidia 9800 GTX+ 1GB OC I can play Crysis on very high 8x aa pretty sure its not my computer..

I uninstalled the game and then reinstalled a different copy of the game and it seemed fine, at first. This is what happens - on any settings. The game will play just fine averaging around 200-300 fps and then after a few minutes it shoots down to four. It dosnt matter if its on minimum or maximum it always shoots down to four. THere is absolutely nothing wrong with my computer, video card, or power supply, I assure you. I can play crysis, gta IV, and dead space for hours on end no problem. Here is my proof http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww337/brewski09/dsg.jpg that was a test on maximum when i first started the game and right after that test it shoots back down to 4 fps... Ive tried turing thigs off, Ive messed with the settings, and nothing seems to do the trick...

and i forgot to mention as you can see in the upper right hand corner of that picture FRAPS is displaying 4 FPS just like I said, as soon as i got done...
