Hi Gang,
It's been a long time since I posted or visited. So I am not up to date on much of the latest tech info. Anyway, can anyone tell me if there is a big difference between the performance of GF4 Ti4200 128mb and the ATI Radeon 9600XT 128mb graphic cards?
Thanks Frew

The 9600XT is more powerfull, plus it has DirectX 9.

There's very little in it, performance-wise. The 9600XT is the better choice of those two (DX9 Support + Better at AA/AF), but it's definitely not worth upgrading from a 4200 to a 9600XT, IMO. If that's what you're asking. DX9 games will look prettier, but you won't get any real noticable performance difference.

I'm pretty much agreeing with the above two posts. I do not think it is a great upgrade to go from the Ti4200 to the 9600XT, unless you have use for the Ti4200 in another system. But the 9600XT is clearly the performance leader of the two. In older games like UT2003 it will allow you to use AA/AF, while in newer DX9 titles like farcry, it will be able to use DX9 shaders and still perform higher. Farcry happens to be a good example of the benefit of having the R9600XT as the ti4200's struggle at higher details even at 800x600, while only giving you the DX8.0 codepath as well. I'm yet to see performance number's for the Ti4200 in HL2, but you can see a huge difference in the water reflections going from a DX8 Ti4200 to a DX 9.0 R9600XT.

The minimum spec. card you would want to upgrade to would be something like a 9700/9800 Pro, because not only are you getting your DX9 but also a lot more overall horsepower.

This is for all the folks who responded. I sort of came to the conclusion you folks did. I was looking at that 6 hour sale in Bestbuy and figured it wasn't worth it unless it was a real upgrade from my GF4 Ti4200 128mb. If I had a 64mb 440mx or such I would of went for the deal. Yet, Bestbuy offers the ATI 9600xt for 99.00 after 100.00 mail in rebate. But I've also seen it priced anywhere from 167.00 up online. Still a good bargain if you really need a good upgrade. It's how I originally got my GF4 Ti4200 128mb card for 89.00...that is at a Bestbuy six hour sale a couple of years back. That was a big upgrade for me then. Anyway, I thank you and I am glad I can add some info about the sale. I think the real bargain is the no interest till Jan. 2006 for purchases 299.00 and up. I can look at getting a decent laptop without laying out all the cash at once and not being slapped with interest if I pay within a year and a month. That offer is also only till tomorrow.
Thanks,

... what is a "frew of stew"??? lol

Sure, I know it will, but not with high details it won't. Looking here and here, the 9600XT using shaders 2.0 way outperformed the Ti4200 which used shaders 1.1. 30-32fps average is hardly playable, although if they turned the detail levels down it would be alright. In their 1024 chart the Ti4200 only barely averaged over 20fps. But yes, I have played farcry on a Ti4200 and found it can handle 1024x768 low/med just fine.

I get around 75 FPS in FarCry at 1024*768 with low quality on my Ti4200. Its runs really smooth. If I turn to medium quality it really takes a hit. Granted the Ti4200 is no speed demon, but it still plays all the current games at lower quality. Gone wait till 6600GT prices drop. Then pick up one of them.

"frew of stew" came from a game I was asked to put in a name for. First, they ased for a user name...so I put in frew...then they put in "of" (sort of like dutchess of york) so I put in the first thing that came to mind and it rhymed...that was stew. I liked it so I kept it as my online name.

When the 6600GT AGP is available for $200 or less like it's announced price, it is unbeatable. But Considering a plain GF6800 is often almost the same price, the 6600GT isn't the deal it could be. For $250, the 6800 is the best card.

ATI's X700pro/XT and their X800 and X800XL look so far to be PCI-e only. I hope someone can show me links to prove me wrong as I'd love to see AGP versions come out. I'm quite annoyed with all this PCI-e only talks.

PSSST... You guys need to get a job at Best Buy, employee discount on my BFG 6800gt was A LOT. Got mine for $307 w/tax.

why did he put a recreation site right next to a waste treatment area?
Because he knew (could foresee) that the waste management area will also be the recreational site for few - straights and non-straights.
Too bad I cannot convince my gf into it. 🙁 But I have heard good reviews.

Just as long as the waste treatment site has down time for people enjoying the recreation site.

If you would put the ti4600 instead of ti4200 then maybe not much difference but the 9600XT is a big leap over the ti4200

FarCry was one of the first games where I really SAW the performance difference between my Ti4200 and my 9500np@9700np. DOOM3 also. With AA and AF turned off on both and running at 1024x768, the 9700np just kicks the Ti4200...

Was the GF6600GT AGP ever advertised at the $200 of the PCIe card? I thought it was always going to be more expensive thanks to the cost of the Bridge Chip.

All the AGP versions that I have seen have cost $225+, whereas the PCIe versions go for about $200, or even less I've heard.

Yeah, I know, the PCIe is often around $180-190, and the AGP is more, but I never expected the AGP to be the same MSRP as the PCIe simply because of the additional cost of manufacturing, and what I expected to be less volume, but maybe they expected demand to be enough to cover HSI Bridge costs.
