I purchased a used Gigabyte AORUS B550M PRO and a new 2TB WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe M.2 (CPU: Ryzen 7 5700x).
The 1TB and 4TB SN850X are listed in the list of supported NVMes by Gigabyte (https://download.gigabyte.com/FileL...0414_n.pdf?v=5e4dc0ada71e447a48b292a1a947e373).
I installed the SSD in the M2A_CPU M.2 slot successfully installed and booted Windows 10. It was working just fine until I booted the machine the next day and all of a sudden the mainboard didn't recognise the SSD anymore as if it wasn't even connected ("N/A" in the slot info).
  1. I reinstalled the SSD in the same M.2 slot multiple times, but no effect.
  2. Then I tried to use the second M2B_SB slot, but not effect. Neither slot recognized the SSD.
  3. I tried the same SSD on another mainboard and it worked!
  4. Later I tried a different SSD, the 1TB WD_BLACK SN750 NVMe M.2 and it worked!
  5. I deleted the windows installation from the SN850X on the other mainboard but it still won't recognise it.
  6. I reset the BIOS to factory defaults, still no effect.
  7. I flashed the BIOS to the latest version F16 from June 12th, but even that didn't fix the issue.
  8. Reset CMOS battery, no effect.
This is a rather strange situation. Both M2A_CPU and M2B_SB slots appear to be working but neither recognises the SSD that is working properly on another mainboard, even though it worked fine at first 🤯

Same thing here. I fitted a third NVMe drive in my latest build and it wasn't recognised in the BIOS, but it worked fine in a different mobo.

I tried another NVMe drive in the third slot and it worked perfectly so that's the way I left it.

I couldn't be bothered to work out what caused the incompatibility issue, but perhaps a firmware update on your drive might sort things out.

I managed to reproduce the problem.
I reset the BIOS by removing the CMOS battery, waited for ~10 seconds,
then put the battery back in and when the system booted into the UEFI menu it displayed that it recognised the SSD.
Then I just powered the system down and up again and the SSD is "N/A".

So it works when the mainboard BIOS has been freshly reset, and stops working once the system is disabled for the first time after the reset.

I even updated the SSD's firmware, and it didn't solve this problem. It's the UEFI that's causing it.

Now might be the time to admit defeat like I did. Some components just don't work together.

It's annoying, I know, especially when you've just spent half an hour disassembling your PC to squeeze an M.2 drive under a large air cooler and a big GPU.

Actually, I found out that the mainboard works just fine with a Samsung 980 2TB and it's the WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB that stops working after the first shutdown. I assume it can be the combination of both the mainboard's firmware and WD_BLACK's firmware that was causing the issue. I will return the WD SSD as it seems to be faulty.

I just bought the exact same SSD, installing in the exact same motherboard, have basically the same problem. In my case it won't detect at all, not even the first time. Got it to replace a 500GB SN750 that has been working without any problem at all (also have a 1tb sn550, which works perfectly.) Don't have any way to try a firmware update, so will likely just return it. Glad to hear Samsung drives work, will likely give that a try as well.

Update: Seems it works in my M2B slot (PCIe 3.0), was able to do a firmware update but still doesn't detect in M2A (PCIe 4.0) Also no heatsink on that slot and it's buried behind my GPU, so I don't think I want it there.
